I Competed at Khelo India and Wasn't Selected. What Now.

Non-selection from the Khelo India scholarship does not come with a reason. That is the part families find hardest: competing, waiting and then getting a short notification with no explanation of what was missing or what to do next.

The temptation is to treat it as a final answer. It is not. But responding to it well requires knowing what it actually means.

What non-selection usually indicates

There are four common situations.

Performance was below the national benchmark for that sport and age group this year. The selection bar is calibrated to national-level competition. A strong state-level performer who has not yet broken into the top tier nationally will typically not make it. This is not a judgment about potential. It is a gap measurement.

The cohort was unusually competitive. The program selects approximately 1,000 new athletes per year across all disciplines. In some sports and some years, the field at the Games is deep enough that athletes who would have been selected in a different year do not make it through. This happens.

The development profile did not project strongly enough. This is different from the result. Two athletes with similar finishing positions can have very different assessments from the TIDC panel based on technique, physical development profile and competitive behavior. An athlete who wins on current strength but appears close to a ceiling gets a different read from one who finishes lower but shows clear developmental headroom.

An administrative issue. The Print’s reporting documented cases where athletes who competed well were held up in documentation problems for months, being told repeatedly that something was incomplete without clear guidance on what to fix. If your child performed at the required level and you believe the issue was administrative, contact your state’s Khelo India nodal officer and the SAI regional office in writing. Be specific about the timeline and what you were told.

There is no formal appeal on selection judgment

If the TIDC panel assessed your child’s performance and development and did not recommend them, there is no review mechanism for that decision. Pursuing a grievance against the panel’s judgment wastes time that is better spent on the next cycle.

The administrative issue is different. If there is evidence of a procedural failure, document it and raise it formally. That is worth pursuing.

What to work on before the next cycle

The Games run annually. The opportunity returns.

Get specific feedback from your coach. Not encouragement. Ask what specifically was below the level required, and what specifically needs to change. If your coach does not know, ask them to find out by watching the athletes who were selected and comparing technique, physical conditioning and competitive record.

Compete more at organized state-level events. The panel sees competition records. An athlete who has three state championships on their record looks different from one with one. More competition also gives more chances to show the improvement trajectory that the panel values.

Improve state-level ranking before the next Games cycle. The clearest path to Khelo India selection is being demonstrably among the best in your state and showing national-level performance at the Games. Work backward from that.

Support that is available now

Non-selection does not mean no support for the next 12 months.

State government schemes. Most states run their own sports scholarship and support programs for athletes performing at the state level. These are frequently underpublicized, less competitive than national schemes and can provide meaningful support while building toward the next Khelo India cycle. SAI Sports Training Centers. SAI operates training centers below the scholarship level where athletes can access quality coaching infrastructure through a trial process. This is a realistic option for an athlete who is not at Khelo India scholarship level yet but needs a structured coaching environment to get there.

Your state sports academy. Several states run their own residential academies, including Haryana, Maharashtra, Odisha, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. These vary in quality and support level but some are genuinely strong programs. Check with your state’s sports directorate.

The longer view

Manu Bhaker did not make it to Paris 2024 on one clean run from Khelo India selection to Olympic medal. The path included a malfunctioning pistol at Tokyo 2020, years of competitive setbacks and a coaching change that required relearning significant parts of her technique.

Khelo India is one pathway. Athletes who build careers in sport come through multiple routes. The families who handle non-selection best treat it as a diagnostic rather than a verdict: here is what the gap is, here is what closes it, here is when the next opportunity comes.
