How to Get Into a SAI Training Center

SAI Training Center selection runs through sports trials, not applications. The entry bar is district and state competition performance, reachable for many athletes who have never considered it. Here is how the process works.

Selection for a SAI Training Center runs through sports trials, not applications. There is no form that puts an athlete in consideration. What does is competing in sanctioned events at the district and state level and performing well enough to qualify for a trial.

The gap between a capable athlete and a selected one is sometimes not ability. It is registration.

Who qualifies for a selection trial

SAI’s documented criteria for STC trial eligibility:

  • Top three positions in a District Championship
  • Top three positions in inter-school or inter-institution championships organized by recognized bodies: CBSE, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, School Games Federation of India or comparable bodies
  • Top four positions in a sub-junior or junior national championship organized by the recognized National Sports Federation for that discipline
  • Top two positions in Inter-Zonal or Inter-University championships run by the Association of Indian Universities

An athlete competing regularly at state-level events in a recognized discipline is often already within the eligibility band without knowing it.

SAI Selection Trial: What Actually Happens

Find your sport's trial date: check sportsauthorityofindia.nic.in or contact the centre directly. Dates are not always announced nationally.
Bring documents: birth certificate, school certificate, sport achievement certificates (minimum state level), parent consent letter, photos, medical fitness certificate.
Physical trial: sport-specific testing, typically a timed drill or performance test plus coach observation plus a basic physical fitness screen.
Notification: if selected, a written offer of provisional admission. If not, no formal feedback on margin; reapply at the next trial cycle.

Common failure points: missing documentation at trial, no state-level achievement certificate, age group mismatch with the centre's current intake. The trial itself is the short part; most families underestimate the documentation preparation required.

The trial itself is the short part. Most families underestimate the documentation preparation required before showing up.

Selection trials are announced by SAI’s regional centers and individual STCs. The format varies by sport and center. Coaches at the trial observe athletes in practice and competition conditions and assess:

Current technical level. Not just results: whether the technique at this age is a solid foundation for development or an early ceiling.

Physical profile. Whether the athlete’s physical development suggests significant improvement is ahead, or whether they are already performing close to their capacity for the age.

Coachability. Trial coaches watch how athletes respond to instruction, correction and pressure. This is an assessment of trainability, not just current ability.

Trials may last a day or span multiple sessions across a weekend. Notification of outcome is typically within a few weeks of the trial date.

The registration problem

Many athletes who are capable of earning an STC trial have never been registered with their sport’s state or national federation. This matters because the qualifying events that SAI’s trial system recognizes (district championships, state-level meets, national sub-junior championships) are organized through the federation structure.

An athlete who only competes at school tournaments or club-organized events may be genuinely strong but has no qualifying record that SAI’s trial process can identify.

The fix: your child needs to be registered with the state association for their sport and competing in events those associations run. This is separate from school sports. Your sport’s state association can tell you how to register and which events count toward SAI’s qualifying criteria.

Documents typically required

While exact requirements are confirmed at the trial stage and vary by center, these are consistently needed:

  • Age proof (birth certificate or Aadhaar)
  • Performance certificates from qualifying events
  • School enrollment certificate
  • Photographs
  • Medical fitness certificate

Preparing these before the trial notice removes the scramble that causes families to miss intake dates.

One common mistake

Families travel to a trial, the athlete performs well and then nothing happens for weeks. The reason is almost always one of two things: the athlete was outside the eligible age range for that specific intake, or documentation was incomplete at submission.

Confirming age eligibility for the current intake before the trial date is a five-minute conversation worth having.

Do this now

What to do this week

  1. Identify the recognized state or national federation for your child's sport and confirm your child is registered to compete in their events, which is the foundation of the qualifying record
  2. Contact the nearest SAI Training Center or SAI regional center and ask when selection trials are scheduled, what the age eligibility is for the current intake and what documents are required
  3. Gather the performance certificates your child has earned so far, starting with district and state championships

Trial formats and eligibility criteria are confirmed by individual SAI regional centers at each intake cycle. Verify current requirements directly before attending.
