SAI Training Centers: What They Are and What They Offer

68 SAI Training Centers across India provide structured coaching, boarding and full support to athletes aged 10-18 at no cost to the family. Here is how the program is structured and what it actually provides.

SAI operates 68 Training Centers across India with more than 4,800 athletes currently enrolled. Alongside these, 23 National Centres of Excellence and 26 Extension Centers form the broader SAI training infrastructure, the largest publicly funded athletic development network in the country.

Most families researching sports programs find Khelo India first and SAI Training Centers second, if at all. The programs are connected (many Khelo India scholars train at SAI facilities), but the Training Center scheme is independently valuable and accessible at a lower competitive threshold than the Khelo India scholarship.

What SAI is and why it runs training centers

The Sports Authority of India is a government body under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Its primary function is to identify athletic talent and develop it through structured, professional coaching environments.

SAI Training Centers exist to provide that environment to athletes who have demonstrated ability at the district and state level but lack access to professional coaching infrastructure. The state government provides the facility; SAI provides the coaches, the funding and the program that runs within it.

The distinction from a private academy is fundamental: the family bears no cost. There is no monthly fee, no equipment purchase, no kit expense. What earns a place is competitive performance at the right level.

The three tiers of SAI training programs

SAI Training Programs: Three Tiers

SAI-NCOE · National Centre of Excellence

8 centres. Elite level, for athletes approaching international selection. Highest support, most selective.

SAI-STC · Sports Training Centres

Multiple locations. For state-level and nationally performing athletes. Residential, training, academic support.

SAI-SDSC · Special Area / State Developing Sports Centres

Broader access, for athletes at state junior level and above. The entry point for most families.

Entry into SAI at any tier requires a sport-specific selection trial; there is no application without trial. Most athletes enter at the bottom tier and progress upward. Contact and trial schedules: sportsauthorityofindia.nic.in/centres.

Most athletes enter SAI at Tier 3 and progress upward. Entering at Tier 1 directly requires already being at near-international level.

SAI Training Centers (STC): The main scheme. 68 centers across the country for athletes aged 10 to 18. Residential, meaning athletes live and train at the center. Selection is through sports trials based on competition performance.

Extension Centers of STC: 26 centers designed to extend the program’s reach into schools and colleges. Athletes here train regularly but attend on a non-residential basis and stay in their home environment. Useful for athletes who are not yet at the level required for a residential placement or who cannot relocate.

National Centres of Excellence (NCOE): 23 centers for athletes with national competition exposure. These programs sit above the standard STC in terms of performance requirement and support level. Athletes here are typically already competing at the national age-group level.

What a residential STC provides

The support package at a residential SAI Training Center:

  • Expert coaches, typically qualified at the national or international level
  • Boarding and lodging at the center
  • Sports equipment and kit
  • Competition exposure managed by the center
  • Education expenses covered for enrolled trainees
  • Medical support and insurance

SAI funds the program. The state government maintains the infrastructure: courts, pools, tracks, gymnasium. The combination means an athlete gets professional coaching in a properly equipped facility at no cost to the family.

Sports covered

27 disciplines across the STC scheme: Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Cycling, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Karate, Kayaking and Canoeing, Kho-Kho, Lawn Tennis, Sepaktakraw, Shooting, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Wushu.

Not every center covers every sport. Each STC is built around the disciplines for which the host state has appropriate infrastructure. Whether a specific sport is available at the nearest center requires checking SAI’s regional listings directly at sai.gov.in.

The honest picture

SAI Training Centers vary significantly in quality. Some have strong coaching staff with consistent development records, well-maintained facilities and regular competition pipelines. Others are structurally sound on paper but poorly executed in practice: weak coaching, inconsistent center management, limited competition exposure.

The variation is tied to what the state government invests in maintaining the infrastructure. States with serious sports investment produce better-run centers. States where sports infrastructure receives low priority produce centers that exist administratively without delivering much on the ground.

This is worth investigating before committing to a center. The right center can accelerate development by years. The wrong one, with poor coaching and a weak competition pipeline, can cost the same amount of time.
