Khelo India and SAI Training Centers: How These Programs Actually Connect
Families compare Khelo India and SAI Training Centers as if choosing between them. They're not alternatives; they're stages. Here's how the two programs relate and what each one actually requires.
An SAI Training Center is where structured coaching happens at the state level. A Khelo India scholarship is what follows national-level performance at the Khelo India Games. Most athletes who earn a Khelo India scholarship spent their development years in programs like SAI Training Centers first.
These are not competing options for the same slot. They are stages in the same system.
Why families compare them
Both programs are run by SAI. Both provide coaching, accommodation and support to young athletes. Both target Olympic sports. The overlap in description makes families treat them as alternatives when the question they actually need to answer is different for each.
The question for SAI Training Centers: can my child access quality structured coaching to develop toward national competition?
The question for the Khelo India scholarship: has my child demonstrated national-level performance and a developmental profile that justifies an 8-year investment from SAI?
Most athletes are ready for the first question before they are ready for the second.
The eligibility difference, clearly stated
SAI Training Centers select athletes aged 10 to 18 based on district and state competition performance. The written criteria include top three positions at district championships and top four positions in sub-junior and junior national championships. An athlete who competes consistently at the state level is within range for an STC trial.
Khelo India scholarship selection requires performance at the Khelo India Youth Games, which is a national competition. Getting to the Khelo India Youth Games itself requires qualifying through state-level events. Only athletes who have already established themselves at the state level can realistically compete at those Games, let alone be selected from them by a TIDC panel.
One program is accessible at the district and state stage. The other is the output of having reached the national stage.

SAI Training Centers provide a residential training environment: structured coaching, boarding and lodging, equipment, sports kit, competition exposure, education expenses, medical support and insurance. The program runs on the academic year model: SAI provides the support structure while the state government provides the facility.
The Khelo India scholarship provides ₹10,000 per month in hand to the athlete, plus up to ₹5 lakh per year in institutional support covering training, diet, equipment and medical insurance, for 8 years. Khelo India scholars are assigned to training centers (in many cases the same SAI training infrastructure) but with a different funding mechanism and a longer committed timeline.
The cash component differs. SAI STCs provide a stipend to residential trainees, though the amount is lower than Khelo India’s ₹10,000 per month and varies by scheme tier. Verify current STC pocket allowance at sai.gov.in, as figures are updated periodically.
Whether you can be on both
Khelo India scholars are typically placed at Khelo India State Centres of Excellence or designated SAI training facilities. In practice the programs overlap considerably. A Khelo India scholar placed at an SAI center is using the same infrastructure as STC trainees, just with a different funding mechanism behind it.
Whether a Khelo India scholar can simultaneously receive STC scheme benefits depends on their specific placement and SAI’s administrative structure at that center. Confirm this directly with the SAI regional office if this situation applies.
What this means for your family
If your child is competing at the district or state level but has not performed at a national competition: an SAI Training Center is the appropriate next step. The selection bar is achievable. The program provides exactly what an athlete at this stage needs: structured coaching, a proper training environment and competition exposure.
If your child has performed at the Khelo India Youth Games and is wondering whether to also pursue STC support: the Khelo India scholarship, if earned, provides more comprehensive long-term support. The STC pathway remains relevant if Khelo India selection doesn’t come through in a given cycle.
These programs are not rivals. An SAI Training Center is often the route that makes Khelo India performance possible in the first place.
What to do this week
- Work out which stage your child is actually at: competing at the district and state level (SAI Training Center is the right immediate target) or performing at national competitions (Khelo India is in realistic range)
- For SAI STC: find the nearest center covering your child's sport at sai.gov.in and ask when selection trials are scheduled
- For Khelo India: confirm your child is registered with the state association for their sport and competing in qualifying events this season
The SAI series, starting with the next article, covers SAI Training Centers in full: what they are, how selection works and what life at one looks like.
All Khelo India figures based on SAI and PIB releases as of 2023-24. SAI STC stipend amounts vary by scheme tier and are updated periodically. Verify current figures at sai.gov.in.
