Tamil Nadu has the highest chess and squash output of any Indian state per capita. South Indian states have significantly increased sports investment since 2020; athletes there now have more access than their parents did. Verify all provisions directly.
The Shiv Chhatrapati Award is Maharashtra’s highest state sports honour. The state government revised the prize amounts in 2024: ₹5 lakh for the lifetime achievement category and ₹3 lakh for other award categories (verify current amounts at mahasports.maharashtra.gov.in). Recipients also receive lifelong free travel on MSRTC buses.
The award recognizes athletes, coaches and sports organizers from Maharashtra with national or international level achievement. It covers 24 approved sports for men and 12 for women. This is an annual recognition award, not a scholarship scheme. Athletes cannot apply for it directly; selection is through the State Sports Department process.
Maharashtra also runs state sports academies in specific disciplines and has sports quota provisions in state government employment. Contact: mahasports.maharashtra.gov.in.
Tamil Nadu
SDAT (Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu) is one of India’s more systematically funded state sports bodies, with an allocated budget that most states cannot match.
SDAT runs multiple support tiers for athletes. The ELITE Scheme provides approximately ₹30 lakh per athlete per year for around 50 athletes competing at international level. The MIMS Scheme provides approximately ₹12 lakh per athlete per year for around 125 athletes. The Champions Development Scheme (CDS) provides approximately ₹4 lakh per athlete per year for around 200 athletes. All figures require verification at sdat.tn.gov.in, as scheme parameters are periodically revised.
Beyond financial support, SDAT operates Centres of Excellence, residential Sports Hostels, Talent Development Centres and district coaching centers across more than 25 disciplines. Srihari Nataraj, who has held national records across multiple backstroke events, developed through Tamil Nadu’s state swimming infrastructure before reaching the national squad.
Entry to SDAT programs is through trials based on district and state-level competition results. Contact: sdat.tn.gov.in.
Karnataka
The Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports administers Karnataka’s programs. The state runs sports hostels and training academies in Bangalore and at divisional headquarters, and provides sports quota in state government employment.
Karnataka athletes performing at national championships are eligible for state cash awards under the state sports policy. Contact: dyes.karnataka.gov.in/english.
Gujarat
The Gujarat State Sports Authority (GSSA) administers state scholarship programs and cash awards for athletes performing at national and international level. Gujarat hosted the National Games in 2022, which significantly upgraded state sports infrastructure. Ahmedabad’s Sardar Patel Sports Complex is now one of the better-equipped multi-sport facilities in India outside the largest cities.

Andhra Pradesh
The Andhra Pradesh Sports Authority (APSA) runs athlete development programs following the 2014 state bifurcation. APSA has academies at Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Tirupati for specific disciplines. Athletes from Andhra Pradesh performing at national games and national championships are eligible for state cash awards. Contact: sports.ap.gov.in.
Telangana
The Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS) administers state programs separately from Andhra Pradesh. The Gachibowli Sports Complex in Hyderabad, one of the most modern multi-sport venues in south India, is the primary facility base. Telangana has cash awards for national competition performance and sports quota in state government employment. Contact: satg.telangana.gov.in.
What to do this week
- Visit your state's official sports authority website and look specifically for sections labelled "scholarships," "academies," "athlete support" or "cash awards"
- For Tamil Nadu athletes: contact SDAT at sdat.tn.gov.in directly to ask whether your current results qualify for CDS Scheme trials, which is the broadest entry point in the SDAT support structure
- For all other states in this guide: contact the district sports office in addition to the state portal, as district-level officers often have faster and more current information about open intakes and application timelines
All scheme figures are as reported in government documentation at the time of writing. Verify current amounts and eligibility at the official state sports department portal before applying.
