Haryana produces a disproportionate number of India’s Olympic medal winners. Bajrang Punia, Neeraj Chopra, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik all came from the state. None of this happened without infrastructure. Haryana’s sports programs (from nursery-level stipends to Olympic-grade cash awards) are the most thoroughly funded state sports system in India. The other states in this region offer less, but they offer something, and for athletes based there, knowing what exists is the starting point.

All cash award figures and employment provisions change between state budget cycles, verify directly with the state sports department. Haryana's scheme is India's most athlete-friendly at the state level; Uttar Pradesh has seen significant investment since 2022.

Haryana Khel Nursery Yojana: Private and government schools with proper sports facilities can register as sports nurseries under this scheme. Athletes enrolled in registered nurseries receive a monthly stipend: ₹1,500 per month for athletes aged 8–14 and ₹2,000 per month for athletes aged 15–19 (verify current amounts at haryanasports.gov.in, as amounts are periodically revised). The scheme provides an early entry point into the state’s formal sports system.

Cash awards for competition results: Haryana provides cash awards for medal performance at national-level events. Government job quota: Haryana reserves positions in state government employment for athletes with national and international results. Punjab

Punjab’s Olympian Sardar Balbir Singh (Sr.) Scholarship Scheme supports athletes performing at the state level. To qualify, athletes must have represented Punjab at Junior or Senior National Championships in the previous two years. The scheme covers Olympic-recognized sports only. Applications go through the district sports officer before the annual deadline. Check pbsports.punjab.gov.in for current dates and amounts, as these are revised each year.

Punjab also provides cash awards for performance at national and international events under its state sports policy, and has sports quota provisions in state government employment. Delhi

Delhi’s programs run through the Directorate of Sports, Government of Delhi. The state operates the Delhi Academy of Physical Fitness and several sport-specific training centers. The Delhi School of Excellence for Sports combines academic and athletic training programs.

Delhi’s performance bar for scholarships aligns with national championship participation, which is higher than most other state-level schemes. For athletes training in Delhi who are performing at state-level but not yet national level, the SAI center infrastructure at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex is often more relevant than state scholarships. Uttar Pradesh

UP’s sports programs are administered through the UP Sports Directorate. The state provides awards for performance at national games and national championships and has government job quota provisions for state athletes performing at national level.

UP has infrastructure in Lucknow at the Major Dhyan Chand Sports Complex and runs programs across the state’s divisions.
