Volleyball Roadmap: A Professional League and What Sits Beneath It
Ashwal Rai's domestic-built path into the Prime Volleyball League's Platinum tier, VFI's age-group structure, SAI training centres, a growing professional league, a note on the still-untrodden NCAA route, and the full risk ladder.
Start at home Volleyball at home, one card at a time
Ashwal Rai built his reputation entirely on the domestic volleyball circuit before commanding one of the Prime Volleyball League’s Platinum-category base prices, the tier reserved for the sport’s top-rated Indian players. He is proof that volleyball’s professional league now rewards a domestic-built career, not only imported talent. Understanding how the Volleyball Federation of India’s own age-group system feeds into that league, and what exists beneath it, is the picture for a volleyball family.
The VFI Domestic Pathway
Age-group structure and selection
The Volleyball Federation of India runs Youth, Junior (Under-20) and Senior National Championships, with India’s Under-20 teams selected through open trials rather than closed regional quotas. Athletes identified through these trials, alongside strong performance at the Khelo India Youth Games, feed directly into the Khelo India Scheme and SAI’s National Centres of Excellence for volleyball.
SAI centers
SAI training centres with volleyball programmes exist across multiple cities, including Jabalpur, Raipur and Cuttack among others, offering full residential training, coaching and competition exposure for athletes who clear the standard SAI trial threshold of strong district, state or Khelo India performance.
Prime Volleyball League: a fast-growing professional tier
Since its 2022 auction launch, the Prime Volleyball League has grown into a professional structure: 10 active franchises as of the 2025 season, a ₹75 lakh salary purse per franchise and a player categorisation system (Platinum at a ₹8 lakh base price, down through Gold, Silver and Bronze) that lets a strong domestic player, not only an imported international one, command a top-tier price. Rosters mix roughly 10 domestic players with up to 2 international signings per squad, and the league’s most recent auction saw more than 400 players go under the hammer, the largest player auction volleyball has held anywhere. For a volleyball player who reaches state or national junior level, PVL is now an additional professional tier worth planning toward.
Academic Management
Volleyball’s training schedule at SAI centre or serious academy level, typically two sessions a day, is comparable to other Olympic team sports and manageable alongside regular schooling through the junior categories. NIOS’s On-Demand exam system becomes the practical answer once Khelo India, national camp or PVL-adjacent commitments start conflicting with a fixed school exam calendar, the pattern this series describes across every team sport with a serious competitive calendar.
The Foreign University Pathway
Women’s volleyball is a well-established, actively recruiting NCAA sport in the United States with a large number of Division I, II and III programmes, and international recruitment is common in the sport globally. This platform did not find an individually documented case of an Indian volleyball player who has gone through this route. The scholarship structure is real, but a family pursuing it should expect to be an early case from India, building the video and results portfolio to approach programmes directly, the same way this platform describes for less-trodden sport-to-scholarship routes elsewhere.
Risk Ladder for Volleyball
Volleyball Risk Ladder: Five Outcomes

Olympic, World Championship, Asian Games or Commonwealth Games selection, the senior national team.

Level 3
Coaching (SAI centre, state and academy roles), physical education teaching, and VFI state association roles.
Level 4
Government exams (SSC CGL, banking, state PSC), on the foundation of academics kept up alongside sport.
Level 5
Sports administration and coaching entrepreneurship, or a professional career outside competitive volleyball.

Level 1: Olympic, World Championship, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games selection, the senior national team.
Level 2: Railway sports quota (volleyball vacancies are explicitly advertised, including specific roles like universal player, libero, counter attacker, setter and centre blocker in recent open recruitment drives) and the Prime Volleyball League, a growing professional income tier for players who reach a competitive standard.
Level 3: Coaching (SAI centre, state and academy coaching roles), physical education teaching with a volleyball specialisation and VFI state association roles.
Level 4: Government exams. A player who kept academic pace through school and NIOS holds the same foundation this series describes for SSC CGL, banking and state PSC exams.
Level 5: Sports administration and coaching entrepreneurship, alongside the general professional track this series describes for athletes who move fully outside competitive volleyball.

What to Do This Week
- Find the nearest SAI training centre with a volleyball programme, and check the Volleyball Federation of India's own calendar for the next Under-20 open trial.
- If a serious competitive level has been reached, research the Prime Volleyball League's own player categorisation system directly; strong domestic players command Platinum-tier prices.
- If a foreign pathway is genuinely the goal, start building a results and video portfolio to approach NCAA women's volleyball programmes directly, since this remains a real but not yet well-trodden route for Indian players.
