Cycling Roadmap: A Velodrome-Built Career

Esow Alben's rise through India's Khelo India-funded velodrome network, why track cycling rather than road cycling is where India's competitive strength sits, CFI's defined Railway sports-quota criteria, and the full risk ladder.

Start at home Cycling at home, one card at a time

Esow Alben won two silver medals at the 2015 Senior National Cycling Championship before he had even left his early teens, was fast-tracked into India’s National Cycling Academy and competed in the 67th National Championships at 14, winning a track cycling silver. He went on to become the first Indian to medal at the Junior Track World Championships, take three golds at the Junior Asian Track Championships, win the Junior Track World Championship outright in 2019 and become the first Indian to reach a senior Track Cycling World Championships semi-final, on his senior debut, in 2022. His entire rise ran through India’s velodrome infrastructure, built out specifically under Khelo India, not through road cycling clubs.

The CFI Domestic Pathway

Federation structure

The Cycling Federation of India, recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and affiliated to the IOA, Asian Cycling Confederation and UCI, runs Senior and Junior National Championships for both men and women as its core annual events.

Velodromes: the infrastructure story

Khelo India funding has directly built out India’s velodrome network, including the Indira Gandhi Velodrome in New Delhi, which hosted the Asian Junior Cycling Championships in 2013, and further velodrome infrastructure in Bangalore. Track cycling specifically, rather than road cycling, is where India’s recent international results have concentrated, Esow Alben’s own career being the clearest evidence, and a family should treat velodrome access as the sport’s practical gateway.

Academic Management

Track cycling’s training schedule, built around velodrome sessions and strength conditioning, is manageable alongside regular schooling through the junior categories, though velodrome access itself may require travel or relocation given the limited number of facilities nationally. NIOS’s On-Demand exam system becomes the practical solution once National Cycling Academy attendance or international junior competition starts conflicting with a fixed school exam calendar.

The Foreign University Pathway

Cycling was named directly among the strongest NCAA scholarship sports for Indian athletes in general sports-scholarship research, alongside tennis, swimming, athletics, wrestling, golf, shooting and rowing. This platform did not find an individually documented Indian case of a competitive track or road cyclist using this route. The underlying scholarship structure is real, and a family with a genuinely competitive Junior National or Asian Junior record should research it directly.

Risk Ladder for Cycling

Roadmaps

Cycling Risk Ladder: Five Outcomes

Level 1

Olympic, World Championship and Asian Games selection, the senior national team. TOPS support applies.

Level 2

Railway sports quota, which requires Cycling Federation of India certificates and recognises Senior, Under-23 and Under-19 All India Inter-State Elite Group Championship results.

Level 3

Coaching (National Cycling Academy and velodrome roles), physical education teaching, and CFI state association roles.

Level 4

Government exams (SSC CGL, banking, state PSC), on the foundation of academics kept up alongside sport.

Level 5

Sports administration and coaching entrepreneurship, or a professional career outside competitive racing.

Scheme details change. Verify current figures with the scheme or federation before relying on them.

The five levels of this risk ladder, summarised. The full description of each follows.

Level 1: Olympic, World Championship and Asian Games selection, the senior national team, the level Esow Alben’s own career is built toward. TOPS support applies at this tier.

Level 2: Railway sports quota, which specifically requires certificates issued by the Cycling Federation of India and recognises Senior, Under-23 and Under-19 All India Inter-State Elite Group Championship achievement for eligibility, a precisely defined criterion rather than a generic sports-quota standard.

Level 3: Coaching (National Cycling Academy and velodrome coaching roles), physical education teaching with a cycling specialisation and CFI state association roles.

Level 4: Government exams. A cyclist who kept academic pace through school and NIOS holds the same foundation this series describes for SSC CGL, banking and state PSC exams.

Level 5: Sports administration and coaching entrepreneurship, alongside the general professional track this series describes for cyclists who move fully outside competitive racing.

Financial Support Available

Khelo India scholarship: Cycling is a Khelo India-funded discipline, with the programme directly responsible for much of the sport’s current velodrome infrastructure (verify current figures at kheloindia.gov.in).

TOPS scheme: Core Group support of ₹50,000/month for India’s top-ranked cyclists (verify current figures at yas.gov.in).

Railway sports quota: A precisely defined route requiring CFI certification and specific All India Inter-State Championship achievement.

Do this now

What to Do This Week

  1. Find the nearest velodrome or National Cycling Academy-linked programme, since track cycling, not road cycling, is where India's current competitive strength concentrates.
  2. Research the Railway sports quota's cycling eligibility criteria directly (CFI certification, Senior/Under-23/Under-19 Elite Group Championship results), since it follows a more precisely defined standard than some other sports' quota routes.
  3. If a genuinely competitive Junior National or Asian record exists, research NCAA cycling programmes directly, since this platform found the route generally recommended for Indian athletes but no specific documented case to model a plan on.
