Fencing Roadmap: Seven Years at SAI, Then a Move Abroad
Bhavani Devi's path, seven years at SAI before relocating to Italy for elite coaching, FAI's age-group structure, why fencing's NCAA scholarship pool is narrow, and the full risk ladder for Indian fencers.
Start at home Fencing at home, one card at a time
Bhavani Devi started fencing at 10, trained at SAI for seven years and only became the first Indian fencer to reach the Olympics after relocating to Livorno, Italy in 2016 to train under coach Nicola Zanotti. That arc, an Indian institutional foundation followed by a move abroad for the sport’s highest level of specialised coaching, is fencing’s shape in India right now: strong at the base, thin at the top domestically.
The FAI Domestic Pathway
Age-group structure
The Fencing Association of India, founded in 1974 and government-recognised in 1997, runs national championships across four progressively introduced age tiers: Sub-Junior, Cadet, Junior and Senior, each contested annually.
SAI NCOE
Fencing is one of the focused disciplines at SAI’s National Centres of Excellence, which provide specialised training, sports-science support, individualised nutrition planning and dedicated coaching for promising fencers, the same institutional base Bhavani Devi herself trained through for seven years before her career’s later international phase.
Academic Management
Fencing’s training schedule, built around technical bout work and conditioning, is manageable alongside regular schooling through the sub-junior and cadet years. NIOS’s On-Demand exam system becomes the practical solution once NCOE residential training or international junior exposure starts conflicting with a fixed school exam calendar, the pattern this series describes across every individual combat and precision sport.
The Foreign University Pathway
Fencing has NCAA presence, but it is a narrow one: Division I women’s programmes may offer up to 5 scholarships and men’s programmes up to 4.5, spread thin across relatively few varsity teams nationally, meaning awards go only to athletes at an elite competitive level. This is a real but much smaller opportunity than rowing, tennis or gymnastics offer elsewhere in this series. For most Indian fencers, Bhavani Devi’s own route, a strong domestic foundation followed by relocating specifically for elite coaching once genuinely competitive, remains the more realistic model than a US college scholarship.
Risk Ladder for Fencing
Fencing Risk Ladder: Five Outcomes
Level 1
Olympic, World Championship, Asian Games or Commonwealth Games selection, the senior national team, the level Bhavani Devi represents as India's sole Olympic fencer to date. TOPS Core Group support applies.
Level 2
Railway and other government sports-quota routes, judged on state or national championship performance.
Level 3
Coaching (SAI NCOE and state association roles), physical education teaching, and FAI state association roles.
Level 4
Government exams (SSC CGL, banking, state PSC), on the foundation of academics kept up alongside sport.
Level 5
Sports administration and coaching entrepreneurship, or a professional career outside competitive play.

Level 1: Olympic, World Championship, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games selection, the senior national team, the level Bhavani Devi represents as India’s sole Olympic fencer to date. TOPS Core Group support applies at this tier.
Level 2: Railway and other government sports-quota routes, evaluated on state or national championship performance, the same standard structure this series describes for other individual Olympic sports.
Level 3: Coaching (SAI NCOE and state association coaching roles), physical education teaching with a fencing specialisation and FAI state association roles.
Level 4: Government exams. A fencer who kept academic pace through school and NIOS holds the same foundation this series describes for SSC CGL, banking and state PSC exams.
Level 5: Sports administration and coaching entrepreneurship, alongside the general professional track this series describes for fencers who move fully outside competitive play.

What to Do This Week
- Find the nearest SAI NCOE with a fencing programme, since this is currently the sport's institutional backbone in India.
- If a genuinely elite level is reached, research training options abroad directly, the way Bhavani Devi's own career required.
- If a foreign pathway is part of the plan, treat NCAA fencing as a narrow, competitive route, with far fewer scholarships available per team than sports like rowing or tennis in this series.
