Score an end

At home 5 min 2 players One room

Ready when: nothing needed.

What you are learning

How archery is scored: the value of each ring, what happens when an arrow touches a line, and how to write an end down and add it up. Archers score their own arrows, so a child who can score is ready for the range.

Words on this card Range, Ends, Target face, X
Range
The marked place where archery is shot: a shooting line, targets in front, a safe area behind.
Ends
A set number of arrows shot before everyone walks forward to score: often 3 or 6.
Target face
The paper with the coloured rings.
X
The small ring inside the centre. It scores 10 and is counted to break ties.

Set up

A printed target face; a pencil; a score sheet.

Weather: any weather

The base setup for archery

Show it first for the one teaching

  1. Point to the rings from the outside in: white 1 and 2, black 3 and 4, blue 5 and 6, red 7 and 8, gold 9 and 10, and the X in the centre.
  2. Mark a pencil dot on the line between two rings and show that it takes the higher score.
  3. Write six scores highest first, then add them up.

Your part while they practise

Mark six "hits" on the face with a pencil; the child scores them.

Step by step

  1. You mark six pencil dots on the face.
  2. The child names the score of each dot. A dot on a line takes the higher ring.
  3. The child writes the six scores highest first.
  4. The child adds them up. 5 ends.
