Mark your space
Mark it once. Every card in archery starts from this space and adds what it needs.
The space
At home no bow and no range. Indoors, an empty floor and a broomstick as a pretend bow for the command practice. A real range needs a backstop, a shooting line and a rope behind which everyone else stands (Upham Woods, MSU).
Where it fits: indoor room, terrace (no-bow work only). A range or club for everything else.
Mark in this order
- A "shooting line" with tape
- A "waiting line" 3 m behind it
Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.
Draw weight and distance
Age-appropriate bow weights are published by USA Archery (about 8 to 15 lb recurve for ages 9 and under; about 10 to 20 lb for 10 to 11); World Archery beginner awards start at 6 m (Red Feather) and 8 m (Gold Feather) for under 12.
Both are from the skill file; do not set up a bow at home.
Safety
Never dry-fire; bows and arrows point down the range; nobody goes forward until "range closed"; arm guard, tab or glove first.
