What to Study in Classes 6–10 to Keep All Doors Open
SSC CGL, UPSC General Studies, banking and railway exams are substantially built on Class 6–10 NCERT content. A student who genuinely understands school curriculum has already started preparing for every major exam. Subject-by-subject guide using NCERT-first principle.
The syllabus of the SSC CGL exam (one of India’s most competitive government job pathways) is almost entirely Class 10 NCERT content. So is the General Studies paper for UPSC Prelims. So is the mathematics section of every banking and railway exam. NEET Biology is Class 11 and 12 NCERT. JEE Physics and Chemistry build directly on concepts introduced in Classes 9 and 10.
One simple implication follows: a student who genuinely understands their school curriculum in Classes 6 to 10 has already started preparing for every major exam they might want to take at 21 or 24. They are not ahead of the syllabus. They are not doing extra work. They are doing school properly.
For a student-athlete, this means the years of school that overlap with serious training are not wasted academic years. They are the foundation years, if they are done with method.
Mathematics: What to Actually Understand
The topics that appear in SSC, banking and railways exams are not advanced mathematics. They are Class 6 to 10 concepts: percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, number systems, basic algebra and geometry.
The student-athlete does not need to do every exercise in every chapter. They need to understand what is actually happening in each topic. Why does percentage change work the way it does? What is a ratio actually measuring? A student who understands these concepts can solve any variation of the problem. A student who memorized a method can only solve the version they practiced.
The NCERT textbooks from Class 6 to Class 10, worked through with genuine engagement and not just completed, cover everything that reappears in government exams. Nothing outside NCERT is needed for these papers.
Science: Concepts, Not Definitions
NCERT Science from Classes 6 to 10 introduces the concepts that reappear in JEE, NEET, SSC and UPSC: cell structure and function, basic chemical reactions, electricity and magnetism, force and motion, life processes, heredity.
A student who understands what a cell actually does, not just its definition, is already part of the way into NEET Biology. A student who understands Newton’s laws as a real description of how objects behave, not as three lines to memorize, is building toward JEE Physics.
The method matters here more than the time spent. Read a chapter. Ask: what is this chapter actually saying about how the world works? If the answer is just “it says the definition is X,” read it again until you can explain it in your own words.
History and Civics: Cause and Effect, Not Dates
Every UPSC aspirant who has cracked the Mains says the same thing: you cannot memorize your way through General Studies. You need to understand it.
The history taught in Classes 6 to 10 (India’s independence movement, the formation of the Constitution, the major periods of Indian history) is not trivia to be memorized. It is the story of how India became what it is. Understanding it is the foundation for every question about governance and current affairs that appears in UPSC, state PSCs and SSC exams.
Read history looking for cause and effect. What happened? Why? What came of it? Dates will stick when they are attached to a sequence you understand. Dates memorized in isolation are gone in three weeks.
Geography: The Underlying Logic
Why is Rajasthan a desert and Kerala wet? What determines where a major city grows? Why are the Indo-Gangetic plains agriculturally significant? These are the questions that NCERT Geography answers, and they are also the questions that appear in every competitive exam.
Understanding the underlying logic (climate, terrain, rivers, agriculture, industry and their relationships) means you can answer geography questions you have never seen before. Memorized state capitals and river lengths are forgotten; understood systems are retained.
English: Daily Reading Is the Only Method
There is no shortcut to English ability. Grammar exercises produce test scores in grammar exercises. Reading produces the sense of language that allows you to handle reading comprehension passages, spot errors and write: the things that English sections in every exam actually test.
Twenty minutes of daily reading (newspapers, books, anything at your level or slightly above) builds language comprehension faster than any grammar workbook. It does not feel like studying. It is more effective than studying.
For a student-athlete reading during travel or on rest days: this is the easiest and most effective academic habit to maintain even in competition season. A book in your kit bag costs nothing.

NCERT textbooks cover every exam-relevant concept at this stage. Supplementary books are not needed yet.
NCERT textbooks are written to cover the exact concepts required at each class level. They are not simplified versions of “real” textbooks; they are the standard. Every coaching guide, every “shortcut” book and every exam preparation material is built on what NCERT covers.
The student who masters NCERT first (understanding it, not just reading it) has a foundation that no guide book shortcut can replace. The student who reads guide books without a NCERT foundation is building on sand.
This is not more work. It is different work. The same hours spent on NCERT with active recall produces more learning than those same hours spent with a guide book that summarizes what NCERT already says more completely.
What to Do This Week
Pick the subject you find hardest. Open your NCERT textbook to the current chapter. Read one section. Close it. Write in your own words what that section was actually saying. If you cannot, re-read with that question in mind: what is this actually saying about how something works?
Identify three topics from this year's syllabus that you have studied but cannot explain without your notes. These are the gaps. Write them down. Use active recall over the next two weeks until you can explain each one fluently without looking.
Start reading something in English for 15 minutes every day this week. A newspaper column, a book, anything you are interested in. Time it. Find the slot in your day (before training, after training or during travel) and protect it.
