What "Proper Study" Actually Means: A Framework for Student-Athletes

Active recall, spaced repetition and first-principles understanding are the methods that produce results, not hours spent with books open. Roediger and Karpicke's research shows self-testing students remember 50% more. Here is the complete framework, adapted for athlete schedules.

In 2006, researchers at Washington University ran a simple experiment. Two groups of students studied the same material. One group read it multiple times. The other group read it once and then tested themselves, trying to recall what they had read without looking. A week later, the self-testing group remembered roughly 50 percent more.

The study, by Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke, is one of the most cited findings in educational psychology. It has been replicated many times since. And almost no Indian school or coaching centre has changed what it teaches students to do in response to it.

Most students in India still study by reading notes again. And most student-athletes blame their sport for the gap in their results, when the real gap is in their method.

READ. Study the source material once without notes.
CLOSE. Shut the book or screen. No peeking.
RECALL. Write or say everything you can remember from that section.
CHECK. Open and compare. Identify gaps.

This cycle repeats: after CHECK, return to READ for the next section. Retrieval practice forces the brain to reconstruct, which is what builds memory. For athletes: treat each recall attempt like a training drill, not a performance.

Active recall feels harder than re-reading. That discomfort is the learning happening.

Active recall means retrieving information from memory, not exposing yourself to it. It is the difference between reading a definition and closing your eyes and saying the definition out loud. The first is exposure. The second is learning.

How to do it:

  • After finishing a chapter section, close the book and write down what you remember. Everything you can.
  • Make flashcards with a question on one side and the answer on the other. Test yourself on them; do not just read them.
  • At the end of the day, without looking at any notes, write down the three most important things you studied.
  • Explain a concept out loud to yourself as if teaching someone who does not know it. If you stumble, you have found a gap.

These feel harder than reading notes. They are supposed to. The difficulty is the mechanism. Your brain builds stronger retrieval pathways when it has to work to find the information.

Spaced Repetition

Hermann Ebbinghaus documented this in 1885 and it has held up ever since: memory decays rapidly after learning, then more slowly. The solution is to review material at increasing intervals, not in one long session, but spread out over days and weeks.

For a student-athlete with a limited daily study window, this is actually an advantage. You review last week’s concepts for 10 minutes before moving to this week’s. You do not cram. You do not try to learn everything the night before an exam.

A simple version:

  • Day 1: Study the chapter using active recall.
  • Day 3: Self-test on the chapter without reading it again first.
  • Day 7: Self-test again.
  • Day 21: One final review.

By Day 21, you own the material. It is in long-term memory, not short-term recall that evaporates after the exam.

Most Indian exam prep defaults to rote. First principles is what competitive exams, and coaches, actually reward.

Competitive exams like JEE, CAT and UPSC reward first principles reasoning. Coaching class content often teaches rote.

Rote memorization means learning the answer. First principles means understanding why the answer is what it is.

A student who memorizes that the formula for kinetic energy is ½mv² can answer one type of question. A student who understands why kinetic energy is proportional to the square of velocity (what that means physically) can answer questions they have never seen before.

Every major Indian competitive exam from SSC to JEE tests whether you understand or just memorized. The student who understands does not panic when the question is framed differently. The one who memorized does.

First principles learning takes more time in the short run and less time in the long run. A concept understood once stays. A concept memorized needs to be re-memorized before every exam.

Subject-Specific Notes

Mathematics: Never read mathematics. Do problems. Understanding comes from working through examples, not from reading explanations. If you cannot solve a problem from a concept you just studied, the concept is not in your head yet.

Science: Understand the concept before any formulas. What is actually happening physically or chemically? The formula is shorthand for something real. Know the real thing first.

History and Civics: Understand cause and effect, not dates. Why did this happen? What did it lead to? Dates follow naturally when you understand the sequence. Dates memorized in isolation vanish in three weeks.

Geography: Understand the underlying logic: why a climate is what it is, why a river flows where it flows, why a region grows what it grows. Not memorized capitals and rivers.

English: The only way to improve is daily reading. Not grammar exercises. Reading. Twenty minutes a day of anything you are interested in builds language comprehension faster than any grammar workbook.

The Pomodoro Method Adapted for Athlete Schedules

The Pomodoro method means working in focused blocks (typically 25 minutes) with a short break between blocks. For athletes who already understand focused effort, this translates directly from what you do in training.

A two-hour study window: four 25-minute active recall sessions, with 5-minute breaks. No phone during the 25 minutes. After each session, write the key points you covered from memory. This is not extra work; it is the learning itself.

During tournament travel: 20-minute sessions work if the method is right. No problem sets on the bus. Flashcard review, concept recall, verbal explanation. These work in transit. Problem sets require a stable surface and uninterrupted focus; save them for a desk.

  1. Pick one chapter in any subject you have already studied. Without looking at any notes, write down everything you know about it. Then compare to your notes. The gaps are exactly what you need to review, and you found them in 15 minutes rather than three hours of re-reading.

  2. Make a stack of 10 flashcards for the hardest topic in your next exam. Questions on one side, answers on the other. Test yourself every morning for one week starting today. Do not read them; test yourself on them.

  3. For mathematics or science, pick five problems from a chapter you think you know. Solve them without looking at examples first. If you cannot solve them confidently, you do not know the chapter yet, regardless of how many times you have read it. Find the gap and close it.
