Reading the target and scoring

At home 6 min 1 to 2 players One room

Ready when: Range rules and commands (b1) started.

What you are learning

How a target is scored, ring by ring, and how to read a group of shots: where its middle is and which way it is off from the centre. Coaches use the group, not one shot, to fix a shooter's aim.

Words on this card Target face, Group
Target face
The printed target, and its rings numbered 1 to 10.
Group
Where a set of shots landed, and the middle of that set.

Set up

A printed target face with scoring rings; a pencil; 10 sample shots drawn as dots on paper.

Weather: any weather

The base setup for shooting

Show it first for the one teaching

  1. Point to the rings: 10 in the middle, down to 1 on the outside.
  2. Score a dot that touches a line: it gets the higher ring.
  3. Circle all the dots and mark the middle of the circle: the group centre. Say which way it is off: "high and left".

Your part while they practise

Check the child's scoring.

Step by step

  1. Score 10 drawn shots by their ring.
  2. Add up the total.
  3. Find the group centre.
  4. Say which way the group is off.

How much: 10 shots 6 min a session 2 days a week

Say one thing Pick one line from "What you will see" for today and say only that.

The game: Score race

You draw a group of 10 shots; the child scores it before the timer runs out.
