First kata and five-step sparring
Ready when: First techniques, with a teacher (b3) done.
What the coach teaches
A first kata of the style (in Shotokan, Taikyoku, then Heian Shodan), learned in parts; five-step sparring (gohon kumite): five steps forward and back, agreed in advance and controlled, with the counter on the last step.
At home, safe only
The kata can be practised alone once the teacher approves, in a clear space.
Ask the club
How partners are matched and what contact is allowed.
What you can see from the side
Controlled technique that stops short of the target.
Self-check what the coach confirms
The instructor passes kata and gohon kumite.
Stop and get a coach when
Any blow lands.
