Capsize drill
Ready when: First session on the water (b4) and Water safety for paddlers (b5) done.
What the coach teaches
In a pool or shallow calm water with the instructor beside the boat: a planned capsize with no spraydeck, a calm exit, coming up beside the boat, holding on to the boat and the paddle, swimming the boat to the side and emptying it; then a capsize with a partner helping to turn the boat back over.
At home, safe only
Water safety for paddlers (b5) at a public pool; Four corners safety game (b1) to Command game: traffic light (b3) on land.
Ask the club
Where first capsizes happen; whether spraydecks are left off for them; who stands beside the boat.
What you can see from the side
The child comes up calmly and holds the boat and paddle.
Self-check what the coach confirms
The instructor sees 3 calm capsizes and exits in a row.
Stop and get a coach when
The child panics under the boat or does not want to capsize again; go back to b5.
Basic is done when the instructor confirms the child is ready for the next session on the water.
