First session on the water

Learnt at a club

Ready when: Four corners safety game (b1) to Command game: traffic light (b3) done, the child swims, and a qualified instructor is present.

Before you look for a club

What the coach teaches

First on land: putting on and fastening the lifejacket, and how to get out of and right a capsized boat. Then on calm water: fitting the boat (the feet reach the footrest with the knees slightly bent), getting in and out, the forward stroke, the sweep stroke to turn, stopping, and a supervised capsize and calm exit.

At home, safe only

Four corners safety game (b1) to Command game: traffic light (b3) on land; swimming at a supervised pool (Water safety for paddlers (b5)).

Ask the club

The swim test; the lifejacket and helmet policy; the ratio of instructors to boats.

What you can see from the side

The child sits upright and does not lean on the back of the cockpit.

Self-check what the coach confirms

The child does a supervised capsize and exit calmly.

Stop and get a coach when
