Para Shooting Roadmap: India's Strongest Paralympic Discipline

Avani Lekhara's two individual Paralympic golds, the compact SH1/SH2 classification structure, NRAI's domestic pathway through the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range, and the full risk ladder for para shooting in India.

A car accident left Avani Lekhara paralysed below the waist at 11. She took up shooting as part of her own rehabilitation, and at Tokyo 2020 won gold in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event, plus bronze in 50m rifle 3 positions. At Paris 2024 she defended that gold with a Paralympic record score of 249.7, becoming the first Indian woman to win two individual Paralympic gold medals, while teammate Mona Agarwal won bronze in the same event. Manish Narwal had already added a Tokyo 2020 gold of his own, in the mixed 50m pistol SH1 event. Para shooting produced more of India’s Paris 2024 medal haul than most other disciplines and now carries this pathway’s single strongest individual track record, Avani Lekhara’s two golds standing as the clearest evidence available anywhere in this series.

The Classification Structure

Para shooting uses SH1 and SH2 classes: SH1 for rifle and pistol events, for athletes with lower-limb impairment who can support the weapon’s weight unaided; SH2 for rifle events specifically, for athletes with upper-limb impairment who require a shooting stand to support the rifle. Avani Lekhara, Manish Narwal and Mona Agarwal all compete in SH1. This is a comparatively compact classification structure, two categories rather than the wider spreads seen in archery, athletics or table tennis, a practical simplicity in this sport.

The Domestic Pathway

Para shooting in India runs under the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), which conducts the All India G.V. Mavalankar Shooting Championship with dedicated para events, alongside junior competition within the same structure. The Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range in Delhi, a 72-acre, world-class facility, hosts both the national para championship and the Khelo India Para Games’ shooting events, making it this sport’s single most important domestic venue and a benchmark destination for a serious family. The Para Sports Roadmap covers how PCI, classification and the Khelo India Para Games work across all six sports, and the Shooting Sports Roadmap covers the able-bodied pathway in the same sport.

Academic Management

Shooting’s training schedule, built around precision and mental conditioning rather than continuous physical exertion, is manageable alongside regular schooling through junior levels, the same pattern this series describes for able-bodied shooting. NIOS’s On-Demand exam system becomes the practical solution once NRAI’s national para championship circuit or international junior exposure starts conflicting with a fixed school exam calendar.

The Foreign University Pathway

This platform did not find a structured NCAA or equivalent scholarship pathway specifically for para shooting. The ISSF Para Shooting World Cup and Championship circuit itself is this sport’s international pathway, illustrated directly by Avani Lekhara’s, Manish Narwal’s and Mona Agarwal’s own careers, and families should plan around that circuit.

Risk Ladder for Para Shooting

Roadmaps

Para Shooting Risk Ladder: Five Outcomes

Level 1

Paralympic, World Championship and Asian Para Games selection, the level Avani Lekhara, Manish Narwal and Mona Agarwal represent. Para-TOPS Core Group support applies.

Level 2

NRAI's national para championship and Khelo India Para Games podiums, plus Railway and other government sports-quota routes.

Level 3

Coaching roles under NRAI-affiliated state associations and at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range.

Level 4

Government exams (SSC CGL, banking, state PSC), on the foundation of academics kept up alongside sport. Disability-specific reservation provisions are worth researching directly.

Level 5

Sports administration and coaching certification, or a professional career outside competitive sport.

Scheme details change. Verify current figures with the scheme or federation before relying on them.

The five levels of this risk ladder, summarised. The full description of each follows.

Level 1: Paralympic, World Championship and Asian Para Games selection, the level Avani Lekhara, Manish Narwal and Mona Agarwal all represent, this pathway’s single deepest individual medal record. Para-TOPS Core Group support applies at this tier.

Level 2: NRAI’s national para championship and Khelo India Para Games podiums without global results yet, alongside Railway and other government sports-quota routes for shooters at state and national level.

Level 3: Coaching roles under NRAI-affiliated state associations and at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range, a field with depth given the venue’s central national role.

Level 4: Government exams. A shooter who kept academic pace through school and NIOS holds the same foundation this series describes for SSC CGL, banking and state PSC exams, alongside disability-specific reservation provisions worth researching directly.

Level 5: Sports administration, coaching certification and the general professional track this series describes for shooters who move fully outside competitive sport.

Financial Support Available

Para-TOPS scheme: Core Group support (₹50,000/month Out-of-Pocket Allowance, foreign training, competition exposure, equipment) for India’s top-ranked para shooters (verify current figures at yas.gov.in).

Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range, Delhi: The sport’s central national venue, hosting both NRAI’s own para championship and the Khelo India Para Games.

Khelo India scholarship: Coverage for identified young talents within the Khelo India Para Games structure (verify current figures at kheloindia.gov.in).

What to Do This Week

  1. Contact NRAI or a state association directly to arrange a classification assessment, since this sport's comparatively compact SH1/SH2 structure makes the entry decision simpler than in most other sports in this series.
  2. Research training access at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range in Delhi directly, given its central role hosting both national para events and the Khelo India Para Games.
  3. Benchmark against Avani Lekhara's, Manish Narwal's and Mona Agarwal's results, this pathway's strongest current evidence of what sustained development in one discipline can produce.
