How to Enroll in NIOS: The Complete Process

SAI training centers across India maintain formal arrangements with NIOS so that athletes who move into residential training programs can continue their schooling without interruption. The arrangement exists because asking an athlete to leave a residential center for regular school attendance does not work.

For a family that has decided to switch to NIOS, or is considering it, the enrollment process is straightforward. The details below are based on the 2025-26 enrollment structure; verify current dates and fees at nios.ac.in and sdmis.nios.ac.in before you begin.

When to enroll: the two blocks

NIOS runs two exam blocks per year. Your enrollment window determines when you can take exams.

Block I: Enrollment roughly March to September (exams in April/May of the following year). Block II: Enrollment roughly September to March (exams in October/November).

An athlete enrolling in August, for example, falls into Block I enrollment. They would take their examinations the following April/May. Enrollment in October falls into Block II, with examinations in October/November of the following year.

This matters for planning. If an athlete wants to sit for Class 12 board exams before a major competition season, they need to plan enrollment timing accordingly. Map the exam window against your competition calendar before you choose a block.

Who can enroll

For Class 10 (Secondary): minimum age 14 years as of July 31 of the enrollment year. No upper age limit.

For Class 12 (Senior Secondary): minimum age 15 years as of July 31 of the enrollment year. Must have passed Class 10 from a recognized board.

There is no restriction on when or why you are enrolling. A student leaving regular school in Class 9 to shift to NIOS, a student who needs to repeat subjects, an adult athlete returning to complete schooling: all are eligible.

Documents to keep ready

The enrollment process is online. Before you start, gather:

• Age proof: Aadhaar card or birth certificate
• Address proof: Aadhaar, utility bill or ration card
• Previous marksheet: Class 8 pass certificate for Class 10 enrollment; Class 10 certificate for Class 12 enrollment
• Passport-sized photo and scanned signature
• Category certificate if applicable (SC/ST/EWS/PwD)

Scanned copies of each are uploaded during online enrollment. Keep physical originals accessible as the study center may ask for verification.

The enrollment steps

1. Go to nios.ac.in, the only official NIOS enrollment portal.
2. Click on Admission → Apply Online.
3. Register with a mobile number and email. Verify both with OTPs.
4. Log in and fill in personal details: name, date of birth, Aadhaar number.
5. Select your subjects (see subject selection below).
6. Select a study center from the list of accredited institutions near you.
7. Upload documents.
8. Pay the enrollment fee online at sdmis.nios.ac.in (verify current amount before paying).
9. Download and print the confirmation receipt.

Selecting subjects

NIOS requires a minimum of five subjects. You can choose up to seven. One subject must be a language.

For Class 12 with a science or engineering target, pick Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology or Computer Science as your core subjects, plus a language (usually English or Hindi). This combination qualifies you for JEE, NEET and most professional undergraduate programs.

For Class 12 targeting arts or commerce, pick accordingly: Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy are available. Check the current subject list at nios.ac.in because new subjects are added periodically.

One specific note: if you intend to apply for JEE Advanced or NEET, confirm the exact subject combination required from the NTA official website before finalizing your NIOS subject selection.

Fees

As of 2025-26, enrollment fees are approximately ₹1,890 to ₹2,400 for five subjects, plus a small online processing charge. SC/ST, EWS, PwD and female candidates receive a fee concession of 15 to 25% on submission of a verified category certificate (verify current concession amounts and eligibility at sdmis.nios.ac.in).

This is the enrollment fee. Exam fees are separate and paid later when you register for a specific exam block or On-Demand slot.

Choosing a study center

Every enrolled NIOS student is assigned to an accredited institution called a study center. The study center is where:

• Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs) are submitted and evaluated
• Practical examinations are conducted
• On-Demand Exams may be held (at designated ODE centers)

For an athlete who travels frequently, choose a study center near your training base, not near your family home. You need to be physically present for practicals and, sometimes, for ODE sessions. A study center that is difficult to reach makes these mandatory touchpoints harder to fulfill.

Common enrollment mistakes

Wrong block timing: enrolling in Block II when you need exams in April/May of the next year means waiting an entire extra cycle. Calculate exam timing before choosing a block.

Subject gaps: choosing subjects without checking the specific combination required for your target college program or competitive exam. Fix this before you finalize, not after.

Missing study center details: not confirming that the selected study center is actively running and has a TMA evaluator for your subjects. Call the study center before finalizing.

Paying through unofficial channels: enrollment and fees are only through nios.ac.in and sdmis.nios.ac.in. Any third party claiming to process NIOS enrollment for a fee is not part of the official system.
