Khelo India University Games: The Institutions Winning It
Only three universities have won the Khelo India University Games across its five completed editions since 2020: Panjab University, Jain University and Chandigarh University, the current back-to-back champion whose students include 8 Paris 2024 Olympians. A results-based look at which universities have serious sports programmes.
Five editions of the Khelo India University Games have been completed since 2020, and only three universities have won the overall team title: Panjab University, Chandigarh (2020 and 2023), Jain University, Karnataka (2022) and Chandigarh University, which won back-to-back in 2024 and 2025. That is a short, concentrated list for a competition that drew 222 universities in its most recent edition. If a family wants to know which Indian universities are serious about sport, this is the real record.
What KIUG measures
The Khelo India University Games scores on a team medal tally: every medal an individual athlete wins contributes to their university’s overall count, and the university with the most golds, tie-broken by silvers and then bronzes, takes the title. The 2025 edition covered 23 medal sports, expanded from 17 in the inaugural 2020 edition, and drew roughly 4,500 athletes. This is a large, closely-watched national competition.
Panjab University, Chandigarh: the historic base
Panjab University won the inaugural KIUG in 2020 and won again in 2023, the only university with two titles from the early editions. Its Directorate of Sports raises university teams across a wide range of disciplines for Intervarsity, Combined University and World University tournaments, a broad institutional commitment rather than strength concentrated in one or two sports. Olympic shooting medallist Sarabjot Singh has represented Panjab University at KIUG, a direct link between the university’s programme and India’s actual Olympic pipeline.
Jain University: the swimming-led breakthrough
Jain University’s 2022 KIUG title, won on its own Bengaluru campus, was built substantially on swimming strength: Siva Sridhar and Shrungi Bandekar were named the Games’ best male and female athletes that edition, and swimmer Shubhrant Patra’s 200m butterfly gold and role in the 4x100m freestyle title helped Jain top the medal standings again in a later edition. Jain University has stayed a consistent top-tier performer across nearly every KIUG edition since, evidence of a sustained programme.
Chandigarh University: the current dominant force
Chandigarh University’s rise is the most striking recent story in this series. It won KIUG 2024 and defended the title in 2025 with 67 medals (42 gold, 14 silver, 11 bronze), and separately became the first private university ever to win the MAKA Trophy in 2023-24, the traditional AIU-run championship this series’ first article covers. Eight Chandigarh University students represented India at the Paris 2024 Olympics, a verifiable link between the university’s own programme and the country’s actual Olympic team. It also won the All India Inter-University Wrestling Championship 2025-26 with 11 gold medals, showing depth beyond the sports that headline its KIUG results.
Guru Nanak Dev University: strength in traditional sports
GNDU, Amritsar, is not a KIUG overall champion, but it holds the MAKA Trophy for 2021-22 and 2022-23 (its 25th MAKA win overall), and its strength in traditional Indian team sports shows directly in KIUG results: GNDU beat Kurukshetra University 33-31 in a tense men’s kabaddi final. Its sports complex includes an international-standard Astro-turf hockey stadium and an Olympic-standard swimming pool, real infrastructure behind the results.
Lovely Professional University: the closest challenger
LPU has not won the overall KIUG title but has consistently finished near the top, runner-up in 2025 with 32 gold, 25 silver and 22 bronze medals, and first runner-up for the MAKA Trophy in 2023. This platform’s next article in this series covers LPU’s athlete-scholarship structure directly, since it is a different institutional strategy from the others named here.
What this means for a family comparing universities
These six institutions are not the only ones with real sports programmes, but they are the ones with an actual, current, multi-edition record across KIUG and the MAKA Trophy, the two national systems this series’ first article distinguishes. A university’s own marketing about its “sports culture” is not evidence. A specific, recent result in a specific sport, checked directly, is.
What to do this week
- Check a target university's actual KIUG and MAKA Trophy results from the last 2 to 3 editions, specifically in your sport, before accepting a general claim about its sports culture.
- If your sport is swimming, look specifically at Jain University's programme; if it is wrestling or kabaddi, look at Panjab University and GNDU specifically, given their documented recent strength.
- Contact the sports department of any university on this list directly to ask about current scholarship or support terms for your sport and level, since institutional strength does not automatically mean support in every discipline.
