Inter-NIT and Inter-IISER: The Sports Meets Beyond the IITs
NIT Calicut's 2026 badminton title and IISER Bhopal's six-year championship streak are both active competitions outside the Inter-IIT Sports Meet. What the Inter-NIT (30 institutions, badminton-centred) and Inter-IISER (10 institutes, 15 sports) meets cover, and how they differ from each other and from Inter-IIT.
NIT Calicut’s men’s badminton team won the All India Inter-NIT Sports Meet in 2026 without dropping a single match against 28 other teams, a historic comeback after a seven-year gap since its last title. Meanwhile, IISER Bhopal has won six consecutive overall championships at the Inter-IISER Sports Meet, from 2018 through 2025. Both are active, national-level competitions, and both sit outside the Inter-IIT Sports Meet this series’ previous article covered. A family researching an NIT or an IISER should not assume Inter-IIT’s scale or structure applies; each of these runs its own, smaller, differently-shaped competition.
Inter-NIT Sports Meet
The All India Inter-NIT Sports Meet brings together roughly 850 student-athletes from 30 institutions: all 29 National Institutes of Technology plus the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, which competes alongside them. Its sporting scope is narrower than Inter-IIT’s 13-sport programme, centred on badminton (team and individual events), ball badminton and basketball, and it rotates annually among host NITs, with NITK Surathkal hosting the 2025-26 edition.
Because the sport list is narrower, a student targeting an NIT for team sports outside badminton, ball badminton or basketball should not expect the same institutional competitive structure Inter-IIT offers across a much wider range of events. NIT Calicut’s 2026 badminton win, ending a seven-year drought, shows the competition is actively contested, just within a smaller scope.
Inter-IISER Sports Meet
Running since 2012, the Inter-IISER Sports Meet covers ten research institutes: the seven IISERs (Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata, Mohali, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati and Berhampur), plus NISER, the Indian Institute of Science and UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai. Roughly 1,500 athletes compete annually across 15 sports, including athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, chess, carrom, kabaddi, kho-kho, football, lawn tennis, table tennis and volleyball, a broader sport list than Inter-NIT’s, closer in range to Inter-IIT despite the much smaller number of participating institutes.
IISER Bhopal is the meet’s clear powerhouse, with seven overall championships including six consecutive titles from 2018 to 2025. IISER Pune (2013, 2016) and IISER Mohali (2014, 2017) are the meet’s other multiple winners, giving a family researching an IISER a current benchmark: IISER Bhopal’s recent dominance is not an assumption, it is the actual, current result.

What this means for choosing between them
Neither meet is a smaller version of Inter-IIT; each has its own distinct scope and history. A student weighing an NIT against an IISER for sport should compare like against like: Inter-NIT’s narrower, badminton-centred competitive structure against Inter-IISER’s broader 15-sport programme, and, within each, the institute’s actual recent results.
What to do this week
- If targeting an NIT for sport, confirm your sport is one Inter-NIT covers (badminton, ball badminton or basketball) before assuming a wider competitive structure exists there.
- If targeting an IISER, check IISER Bhopal's current run and your target institute's own recent Inter-IISER results, since the field has a clear current leader.
- Contact the institute's sports council to ask about trial timelines for Inter-NIT or Inter-IISER selection, the same practical step this series' Inter-IIT article recommends.
