Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai (Haryana)

MNSS is the most established government-funded dedicated sports school in India. Founded in July 1973 by the Government of Haryana, the school sits on a 300-acre campus in Rai, Sonipat district. It runs Classes V through XII as a fully residential and co-educational institution affiliated to CBSE.

Sports offered: Athletics, Gymnastics, Swimming, Boxing, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey (astroturf), Horse Riding, Shooting (indoor rifle range), Lawn Tennis and Volleyball.

Who it is for: Primarily Haryana athletes. 80 percent of seats are reserved for Haryana domicile students. Limited seats are available for students from other states.

Admission at Class 5: The main entry point is Class 5, with 100 seats (50 boys and 50 girls). Age requirement: 8 to 10 years at time of admission. Selection involves a written examination, a Physical Efficiency and Sports Aptitude Test (PESAT) and a medical examination.

OSP category: Students who have won medals at the Khelo India Youth Games, National School Games or Khelo Haryana qualify for direct admission under the Outstanding Sports Person (OSP) category. This is the fastest entry route for athletes already competing at national school level.

Other entry points: MNSS also admits students at Classes 6, 8, 9 and 11 in limited numbers, through a similar selection process.

Contact and admission schedule: mnssrai.com. Admission exams are typically held in April. Verify current dates at the school’s official website.

Krida Prabodhini (Maharashtra)

Maharashtra runs a network of residential sports training centres under the name Krida Prabodhini. The first centre was inaugurated on 31 January 1996 in Pune under the Department of Sports, Government of Maharashtra.

As of 2025-26, the network has 8 centres across the state with 492 trainees enrolled (435 residential and 57 non-residential). Sixteen sports are covered: Judo, Gymnastics, Hockey, Shooting, Football, Swimming, Athletics, Wrestling, Badminton, Archery, Handball, Table Tennis, Weightlifting, Triathlon, Cycling and Boxing.

Krida Prabodhini centres are residential sports training programmes, not standalone schools with their own board affiliation. Athletes at these centres attend nearby schools for academics while Krida Prabodhini provides the training structure. The academic schooling is managed through the state board system separately.

SDAT (Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu) operates sports hostels and training centres but not a full residential school in the MNSS or Krida Prabodhini model. Andhra Pradesh: The Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) runs a network of Sports Adopted Schools and the Anantapur Sports Village, which functions as a residential training programme for athletes from Under-12 to Under-19. How academics work at dedicated sports schools

At MNSS Rai, academics run on the CBSE board calendar with scheduling adjusted around training. The daily structure at residential sports schools typically places the first training session before 7am, academic sessions through the late morning and afternoon and a second technical session in the evening.

Athletes at dedicated sports schools do not lose academic ground because of sport. The environment is built around both commitments. This is the structural difference between attending a regular school and training externally versus being in an institution where the two are integrated from the first day.

Who these schools are not for

Dedicated government sports schools are highly competitive to enter, geographically specific and in many cases have strong domicile requirements. MNSS Rai serves primarily Haryana athletes. Krida Prabodhini serves Maharashtra.

The more relevant question for most families is not whether a dedicated sports school exists somewhere in India, but whether one exists in their state and whether their child meets the entry criteria and the entry age.
