Armed Forces Sports Quota: Army, Navy, Air Force
All three Indian armed services recruit athletes through sports quota, governed by the Services Sports Control Board. Army, Air Force and Navy each have different entry points, performance criteria and educational requirements. Army Sports Institute in Pune, AgniveerVayu sports route and Navy Petty Officer quota explained.
Neeraj Chopra joined the Indian Army in 2016 as a Naib Subedar in the Rajputana Rifles through the sports quota. Five years later, he threw a javelin 87.58 metres at Tokyo and won India’s first Olympic gold in athletics. He was later promoted to Subedar Major, the highest rank for a Junior Commissioned Officer, before being granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army in April 2025.
His outcome is exceptional. The entry route is not.

All three armed services recruit athletes through sports quota, coordinated under the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB). The SSCB traces its origin to the Army Sports Control Board, established in March 1919. It merged across all three services on 3 April 1945. Today it affiliates with 22 national sports federations and fields “Services” teams at the National Games, one of only a handful of non-state entities with that standing.
The SSCB is also a founding member of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and a member of BCCI. Services cricket and Services football compete as full teams in national competitions through this structure.
Indian Army
Direct Entry as Havildar (Sports): For athletes who are junior or senior national medalists, or who have represented India internationally. Minimum education: 10th pass (Matriculation). Age: 17.5–25 years. Three-year probation period.
Direct Entry as Naib Subedar (Sports): For World or Asian medalists, or athletes with two or more international participations. Minimum education: 10th pass. Age: 17.5–25 years. Approximately 50 vacancies per year across all sports in this category.
Sports quota is capped at 2% of annual Army vacancies for these two entry points combined. Verify the current cap at joinindianarmy.nic.in.
Applications for both are offline, through joinindianarmy.nic.in. Notifications are periodic, not on a fixed annual calendar.
Bonus marks for general recruitment rallies: Athletes competing in Agniveer rallies (GD, Technical, Clerk, Tradesman) receive bonus marks: 20 marks for international representation, 15 for national medals, with lower bonuses for state-level achievement. Physical standard relaxations also apply: +2 cm height, +3 cm chest, +5 kg weight against standard benchmarks. This is a separate route from the direct Havildar/Naib Subedar sports quota.
Army Sports Institute (ASI), Pune
ASI is the Army’s primary high-performance training facility, part of the Mission Olympics program launched in 2001. Sports trained at ASI Pune: Archery, Athletics, Boxing, Diving, Fencing, Weightlifting, Wrestling. The broader Mission Olympics network includes the Army Marksmanship Unit at Mhow for shooting, and rowing and equestrian nodes at Pune, Mumbai and Meerut.
The Army Boys Sports Company (ABSC) takes athletes aged 8–16 through a selection process conducted jointly with SAI at ASI Pune. This is the talent identification pipeline that feeds into the Army sports system at a formative stage. It is the youngest entry point available in the entire armed forces sports structure.
Athletes from the Army system: Milkha Singh (four Asian Games golds, one Commonwealth gold), Vijay Kumar (Olympic silver, London 2012, 25m rapid fire pistol), Jitu Rai (Naib Subedar, 11 Gorkha Rifles; world number-one shooting ranking; multiple Commonwealth and Asian Games golds), Amit Panghal (Asian Games gold 2018, boxing).
Pay for Havildar (Level 5, 7th CPC): ₹29,200–92,300. Naib Subedar (Level 7): ₹44,900–1,42,400. Verify current scales at joinindianarmy.nic.in as 8th CPC revision is pending.
Indian Air Force
The Air Force recruits athletes through AgniveerVayu (Sports Quota), a four-year contract scheme. Eligible sports: Athletics, Boxing, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi, Swimming, Wrestling, Shooting, Basketball, Volleyball, Gymnastics, Weightlifting, Handball, Cycling.
Educational requirement: 10+2 in any stream with minimum 50% aggregate and 50% in English. No science stream requirement for the non-science track. Age: up to 21 years at enrollment.
Performance criteria: international representation for India, top-5 finish at Junior Nationals, state representation at Senior Nationals or participation in All India Inter-University, Khelo India or BCCI tournaments. The Air Force criteria are notably more accessible at the lower end than the Army’s direct sports quota: state-level Senior Nationals representation qualifies.
Pay during the four-year AgniveerVayu contract: ₹30,000/month in Year 1 rising to ₹40,000/month in Year 4. Seva Nidhi payout of ₹10.04 lakh on completion. Life insurance of ₹48 lakh (non-contributory). 25% of AgniveerVayu recruits are absorbed into permanent service after the four-year term. Verify the current absorption policy at agnipathvayu.cdac.in, as this is subject to revision.
Indian Navy
The Navy recruits at two levels: Petty Officer (Sports Quota) and Chief Petty Officer (Sports Quota). Both require minimum Class 12 pass. Age: 17.5–25 years. Applications are offline, through joinindiannavy.gov.in.
Eligible sports for male candidates (21 disciplines): Athletics, Aquatics, Basketball, Boxing, Cricket, Equestrian, Football, Artistic Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Kayaking and Canoeing, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Squash, Tennis, Golf, Volleyball, Wrestling.
Eligible sports for female candidates (9 disciplines): Athletics, Aquatics, Boxing, Kayaking and Canoeing, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Weightlifting, Wrestling.
Petty Officer minimum criteria: state-level sports certification. Chief Petty Officer: medals at World, Asian, Commonwealth or Olympic level, or two or more participations at Asian Games or Commonwealth Games level.
Pay during training: ₹14,600/month. Post-training Petty Officer: Level 5 pay plus ₹5,200 Military Service Pay plus DA. Verify current scales at joinindiannavy.gov.in.
Benefits across all three services
Free medical through service hospitals, accommodation on base, pension under OROP (One Rank One Pension, effective July 2014), children’s education allowance and group insurance are standard across all three services. For permanent service personnel (not Agniveer contract), pension is available after 15 years of qualifying service for Personnel Below Officer Rank.
The combination of job security, medical coverage, accommodation and a continued athletic career within the Services structure is the reason the armed forces route remains the most common employment path for serious Indian athletes outside of Railways.
What to do this week
- Identify which service is most realistic for your sport. Check joinindianarmy.nic.in (Army), agnipathvayu.cdac.in (Air Force) and joinindiannavy.gov.in (Navy). Compare your sport against each service's eligible disciplines and your achievement level against the minimum criteria for the specific entry point.
- Pull your last two years of competition certificates. Army Havildar requires national medals or international participation. Air Force AgniveerVayu accepts state-level Senior Nationals representation. Navy Petty Officer accepts state-level certification. Know which tier you qualify for before the application window opens.
- If you are under 16, read about the Army Boys Sports Company (ABSC) at joinindianarmy.nic.in or the SAI portal. Selection trials for ABSC are conducted at ASI Pune jointly with SAI. This is the earliest formal entry point into the armed forces sports system.
