A first kids' tournament

Learnt at a club

Ready when: First classes, with a coach (b5) under way and the coach says yes.

Before you look for a club

What the coach teaches

The short rules (points, a win by pinning both shoulders, fair play), the handshake, a warm-up bout with a partner of equal weight.

At home, safe only

Animal walks and warm-up (b1), Foot tap and palm push (b6).

Ask the club

How partners are grouped by weight, age and experience, how long a bout lasts, who referees each mat, and whether the mats are laid without gaps or overlaps.

What you can see from the side

Small groups by weight, age and experience; a coach on each mat; a handshake before and after each bout.

Self-check what the coach confirms

The child shakes hands before and after every bout.

Stop and get a coach when

A partner is much heavier, or any knock to the head or neck.

Basic is done when a club coach accepts the child.
