Mark your space
Mark it once. Every card in sailing starts from this space and adds what it needs.
The space
At home a room or yard with a rope and a stool; on the water a dinghy, a launch area and a rescue boat.
Where it fits: indoor room (knots, wind games), yard, sailing club.
Kit
A lifejacket or buoyancy aid on the water, sun protection, wet clothing, a rope for knots.
Safety
The child must swim; a rescue boat; tide and weather checks; capsize drills only once tacking and speed control are secure, and only with supervision.
A brightly coloured life jacket of the right size, adjusted correctly, worn at all times on the water; a means to reef or reduce sail in strong wind; check wind, waves, tides and currents first; stay clear of falling masts and watch the boom; glasses and sunglasses on a strap; bright clothing such as a rash vest; watch for cold, tiredness and hunger; first lessons in light wind close to the shore; nobody is made to capsize.
