Joint locks and strangles: knowledge only for juniors

Learnt at a club

Ready when: the instructor introduces them.

Before you look for a club

What the coach teaches

The names and the danger of joint locks (for example juji-gatame) and strangles, so the judoka understands them and taps at once. School judo in Japan teaches neither at junior or senior high school; juniors do not apply them to the point of submission.

At home, safe only

None. No locks or strangles in play.

Ask the club

Its junior rules and the age when these are taught.

What you can see from the side

The coach stops the practice at the point of control.

Self-check what the coach confirms

The child can name the rule and show the two-tap sign.

Stop and get a coach when

Any partner taps and the practice does not stop.

Intermediate is done when the instructor passes the grade.
