First dives from the edge

Learnt at a club

Ready when: Jumps and rolls from the pool edge (b2) done.

Before you look for a club

What the coach teaches

Head-first entries in small steps from low positions (sitting, kneeling, crouching) before standing dives, hands locked and arms on the ears, with the coach close by; the child dives head first only once the coach has taught and passed it.

At home, safe only

Dry-land diver (b4) on land; flexibility work for shoulders and ankles via the workonfitness.com link.

Ask the club

Whether the child may move to a board only after the poolside skill is passed; the depth and clearance used for first dives.

What you can see from the side

The child's body stays straight on entry.

Self-check what the coach confirms

The coach passes the head-first entry from the edge.

Stop and get a coach when

Repeated flat entries or pain.
