Playing spin, using the feet
Ready when: Front-foot drive and defence (i1) and Back-foot shots, pull and cut (i2) done and a coach with nets.
What the coach teaches
The sweep and the reverse sweep (turning the bat to sweep the ball to the off side instead); moving down the pitch to the ball; playing a ball that turns in or away; soft hands to take the pace off the ball for quick singles.
At home, safe only
Shadow batting in front of a mirror; sweeps off a tee with a soft ball: hit the half-volley, front pad on the line of the ball, bat flat, roll the wrists, weight forward, along the ground behind the batter's side.
Ask the club
Net sessions with a spin bowler; helmet and guard policy.
What you can see from the side
The batter's head over the front knee on the sweep.
Self-check what the coach confirms
The coach marks 6 of 10 sweeps along the ground.
Stop and get a coach when
A blow from the ball; stop and check.
