Screens and help defence
Ready when: Pass to space and cut (i3), Show your hands, then go behind (i7) and Get between ball and basket (i9) done; the player is in a team.
What the coach teaches
Screens away from the ball (setting them, using them and reading them), the hand-off, and team defence: helping to stop a drive, then getting back to your own player.
At home, safe only
The pass-and-cut work (Pass to space and cut (i3)), the V-cut and backdoor cut (Show your hands, then go behind (i7)) and the 1 against 1 drive drill (Get between ball and basket (i9)).
Ask the club
At what age they bring in screens and the hand-off.
What you can see from the side
The screener stands still before contact; the player using the screen waits, then runs close past it; a helping defender steps across and then runs back to their own player.
Self-check what the coach confirms
In a 10-minute practice game, count the times the player helps and gets back to their own player in time.
Stop and get a coach when
Screens become collisions or the player is knocked over.
