Which eye leads
Ready when: Range commands at home (b1) done.
What you are learning
Which of your eyes does the aiming. Most people have a leading eye. In archery you aim with it, and it often decides which hand holds the bow, so the instructor will want to know.
Words on this card Leading eye
- Leading eye
- The eye that does most of the aiming. Most people have one.
Set up
Nothing but a small object on the far side of the room, such as a light switch.
Weather: any weather
Show it first for the one teaching
- Stretch both arms out and make a small triangle with your thumbs and first fingers.
- With both eyes open, look at the far object through the triangle.
- Close your left eye. If the object stays in the triangle, your right eye leads; if it jumps out, your left eye leads.
Your part while they practise
Run the check twice with your child. Make a triangle with both hands, frame the far object with both eyes open, close the left eye: if the object stays framed, the right eye leads, otherwise the left. Or point a finger at the object and close each eye in turn: the finger jumps when the leading eye is closed. A child's leading eye can change, so check again each month.
Step by step
- Both eyes open, frame the far object in the triangle.
- Close the left eye and see whether it stays framed.
- Open both eyes again and say which eye leads.
- Check with the finger: point at the object and close each eye in turn.
- Repeat until you have 5 results.
How much: 5 checks 2 min a session once a month
Say one thing Pick one line from "What you will see" for today and say only that.
The game: Eye detective
Everyone guesses their leading eye first, then the tests show who was right.
Who plays: the whole family, 2 or more.
How to play, turn by turn
- Turns
- Each player writes down a guess: left eye or right eye
- Each player does the triangle check 5 times while another player watches
- Reveal the guesses and compare
- Fair play
- A younger child uses the finger check.
- Points
- 1 point for each check that gives the same eye as your first check; 2 points if your guess was right.
- Fouls
- No point for that check
- Squinting or closing both eyes
- Moving the triangle after closing an eye
- Winning
- The most points after everyone has had 5 checks.
- 3 points for 1 star
- 5 points for 2 stars
- 7 points for 3 stars
Easier or harder
Use the finger method.
Check with a cardboard tube.
What you will see, and what to say
- the result changes each time
Try again slowly with both eyes open
Start with both eyes open and close only one. - the child squints
Relax your face
The eye closes softly; the face stays relaxed.
Self-check
The same eye comes out 5 of 5 times.
Stop and get a coach when
The result keeps changing; ask the instructor to check.
