Sports Quota at Central Universities and IIT Madras: BHU, JMI, JNU, AMU, Hyderabad University
IIT Madras became the first IIT to introduce sports quota in 2024: two supernumerary seats per UG program, JEE Advanced required plus a national medal. BHU, JMI, AMU, University of Hyderabad and JNU all run their own provisions. How to apply to multiple institutions simultaneously.
Delhi University gets the most coverage in sports quota discussions. But several other central universities run active provisions, and as of 2024 the most significant new development in this space happened not at a traditional university at all.
IIT Madras: Sports Excellence Admission
In February 2024, IIT Madras announced Sports Excellence Admission (SEA), making it the first IIT in India to introduce sports quota for undergraduate programs. The first batch of student-athletes was admitted in the 2024-25 academic year.
The structure differs from university sports quota in two ways. First, the academic bar remains: candidates must have a qualifying rank in JEE Advanced. SEA does not bypass the entrance exam. Second, the athletic bar is specific: at least one medal at a national or international competition within the last four years is required (verify current eligibility at ugadmissions.iitm.ac.in/sea).
Seats per program: two supernumerary seats (one gender-neutral and one exclusively for female students; verify current numbers at the SEA portal, as this may be revised in future cycles).
Sports covered under SEA (verify at official portal): aquatics, athletics, chess, cricket, badminton, basketball, football, hockey, squash, table tennis, lawn tennis, volleyball, weightlifting.
The application goes through a separate IIT Madras portal, not through JoSAA. An athlete who has cleared JEE Advanced but whose rank doesn’t place them in their preferred branch can use a national medal to claim a seat through SEA. Both conditions must be met simultaneously: a JEE rank without the medal does not qualify, and a medal without the JEE rank does not qualify.
Watch whether other IITs follow. IIT Madras being the first does not mean it will stay the only one. Check individual IIT admission portals at the start of each cycle.
Banaras Hindu University (BHU)
BHU maintains sports supernumerary seats in undergraduate programs. The certificate structure follows the same pattern as DU: typically a three-year window with a May-to-April validity period (verify current window at bhu.ac.in under undergraduate admissions).
One structural difference from DU: BHU’s trial is conducted centrally by the University Sports Board, not by individual colleges. One trial appearance covers your application across programs at BHU, which is logistically simpler than DU’s college-by-college trial system.
BHU has a large residential campus in Varanasi with multi-sport facilities. Athletes in wrestling, athletics and football who are targeting the north-central region and want the infrastructure of a large central university should look at BHU specifically. Admission notifications appear on bhu.ac.in under the undergraduate admissions section.
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI)
JMI runs several of its admissions independently of CUET, and sports quota is part of its admission structure. Visit jmi.ac.in and search for the current year’s admission notification to find the sports quota section and its application timeline.
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)
AMU has sports quota provisions in undergraduate admissions. Details and trial dates are published at amu.ac.in during the admission cycle. AMU’s sports quota reflects its tradition in certain team sports. Check which sports are listed in the current year’s notification before assuming your sport is covered.
University of Hyderabad (UOH)
UOH has sports quota provisions for its programs. Athletes in South India targeting a central university with strong postgraduate and research programs should check uohyd.ac.in for the current year’s sports admissions notification.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)
JNU’s admission policy includes sports quota as a category. Given JNU’s program structure (primarily social sciences, languages and science at postgraduate and research level), this is more relevant for PG applicants than UG. Check jnu.ac.in and search for “admission policy” to find the current year’s document, which includes the sports quota section.
Applying to multiple central universities at once
Central Universities With Sports Quota: Quick Comparison
| IIT Madras | BHU | JMI | AMU | UOH (Hyderabad) | JNU | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Known strength | Technical quality plus IIT degree | Multi-sport, high selection volume, UP advantage | Strong minority quota alignment plus sports | Strong wrestling and kabaddi record | Tennis, swimming, athletics | Smaller program, specific sports |
| Certificate requirement | National minimum for most; IIT Madras needs national plus a technical standard | |||||
| Application cycle | April–June, typical, varies annually | |||||
| Website | www.iitm.ac.in | bhu.ac.in | jmi.ac.in | amu.ac.in | uohyd.ac.in | jnu.ac.in |
Application deadlines often open in March–April. Monitor each university website separately; there is no common portal for all central universities.
Central university sports quota timelines are not synchronized. DU trials typically run in August. BHU runs its own calendar. IIT Madras SEA has a separate process from both.
Applying to multiple central universities simultaneously is worth doing for athletes who qualify at more than one institution. The documents required (certificate copies, academic records, identity documents) are the same across all of them. Prepare one complete document set and apply everywhere your sport and certificate level qualifies you.
What to do this week
If IIT Madras applies to you (JEE Advanced rank plus a national or international medal), go to ugadmissions.iitm.ac.in/sea today and check the current cycle application window and eligibility criteria. This portal is the authoritative source.
For BHU, JMI, AMU or UOH: go to each institution's official admissions portal and search for sports quota in the current year's notification. Download it. Note the trial date, required certificate level and application deadline.
Prepare one complete document set now: up to three sports certificates from the last three years from recognized bodies, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, identity documents. Once assembled, you can apply to every institution you qualify for without starting over each time.
