What "Still Playing" Looks Like With a Full-Time Job

Governed masters and veteran competitive structures already exist in India across athletics, badminton, tennis, golf and swimming, with national federations and annual championships, not informal weekend hobbyism.

In 2026 the Badminton Association of India held its Indian Masters National Badminton Championship for the 48th time, as the Karnataka Badminton Association records for the March 2026 edition in Goa. This is a national championship that has run every year for close to five decades, open to players aged 35 and above in ten age groups, from 35+ to 80+, as the Badminton Association of India’s own circular for that edition sets out.

Most people picture “still playing sport after 25” as an informal weekend habit, a five-a-side game or a casual club session. That undersells what actually exists in India. There is governed competitive structure for this exact age group, with national federations, eligibility rules and annual championships. This article is about that structure.

The federations that already exist

The Masters Athletics Federation of India is the recognised body for track and field athletes aged 35 and above, and a related body, the All India Masters Sports Federation, runs championships in five-year age bands starting at 30, all the way up to 100 and above. Indian athletes in this system also have an international pathway: the World Masters Athletics Championships is a genuine competition, held from 22 August to 3 September 2026 this year.

Tennis has its own structure through the All India Tennis Association, which sanctions seniors tournaments in age categories from 35+ up to 65+, each run with a proper qualifying draw and match format.

Golf offers something rarer: a governed category that starts right inside this article’s own age bracket. The Indian Golf Union’s Mid-Amateur category is open from age 25, with a separate Seniors category from 55 feeding into actual Asia-Pacific selection tournaments.

Swimming has structure too, and it starts even earlier than most people assume. The Swimming Federation of India runs National Masters Championships with a minimum entry age of 25, in five-year bands right up to 80 and above.

Why this matters more than it looks like

None of these are exhibition events for people who used to be athletes. They are current, competitive, federation-run championships that someone in their late twenties or thirties can enter this year. The opening article of this series covered the routes back into sport without playing. This is the other half: routes to keep actually playing it, with structure behind that choice.

What changes at this level is not the seriousness of competing. It is the shape of the season. A masters or veteran category runs on a national annual calendar, not a daily training-camp schedule, which is what makes it compatible with a full-time job in a way an elite junior or senior national programme is not. Which Sports Have a Real Competitive Tail Past 25 sets these federations side by side and names the sports where the answer is no.

What to do this week

  1. Look up your own sport's masters, veteran or seniors body: Masters Athletics Federation of India, the All India Tennis Association's seniors tournaments, the Indian Golf Union's Mid-Amateur category, the Swimming Federation of India's National Masters Championships or your sport's own state association.
  2. Check the eligibility age and entry process for the nearest state-level event. Most of these categories start well before 35, and golf and swimming both start at 25.
  3. Read the next article in this series for a sport-by-sport look at which competitive tails are strong and which ones are thinner.
