Wrestling · base setup

Mark your space

Mark it once. Every card in wrestling starts from this space and adds what it needs.

Fits: One room, Park

Seen from above, to scale: 2 m by 2 m.

The space

At home a clear floor with a mat or thick carpet of 2 m by 2 m; a park lawn; at a club a wrestling mat.

Where it fits: room, lawn, club mat.

Mark in this order

  • A circle (rope or tape) for the partner games
  • A start line for animal walks

Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.

Practice kit first

A mat or carpet, a scarf or a sock as a "tail", a ball; no shoes on the mat; clean clothes.

Safety

Partners of similar size and weight; a stop signal that both know; no pulling on the neck, head or fingers; cut nails; report skin marks to the coach (skin infections spread on mats); never practise throws or holds at home; "stop" ends any game at once; shake hands before and after every bout; at a club, technique only with a qualified wrestling coach, on mats laid without gaps; a level area with 3 m clear around and high-density mats secured together without overlap; headgear and knee pads as the club requires; tight-fitting clothes; jewellery off; wipe mats and gear with antiseptic; cover any open wound.
