Volleyball · base setup

Mark your space

Mark it once. Every card in volleyball starts from this space and adds what it needs.

Fits: Yard or lane, Terrace, Park, Hall or court

Seen from above, to scale: 3 m by 3 m.

The space

A wall and a clear floor of 3 m by 3 m for solo and pair work; a court of 9 m by 4.5 m with a net at 2 m or a rope for 2 v 2 and 4 v 4 (lines as on a badminton court).

Where it fits: terrace, lane, hall, park, beach.

Mark in this order

  • A net or rope line
  • A serving line
  • A target square on the wall or the floor

Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.

Practice kit first

A lighter or soft volleyball (a beach ball or balloon at the start), a rope or a band, cones, a bucket.

Safety

Clear the floor; no stepping under the net; knee pads for floor digs; do not block with the face; sun and water outdoors.

A light ball that does not hurt the fingers; no watches or jewellery, long hair tied back; spare balls in a container, not on the floor; padded posts; a 2 m clear zone round the court; enclosed shoes with non-slip soles.
