Triathlon · base setup

Mark your space

Mark it once. Every card in triathlon starts from this space and adds what it needs.

Fits: Yard or lane, Terrace, Park, Ground or field, Pool or water

Seen from above, to scale: 10 m by 20 m.

The space

A car-free area of 20 m by 10 m for bike control; a running track or open ground; a pool at a club; a "transition area" of 2 m by 3 m with a towel, shoes and helmet laid out.

Where it fits: terrace, lane, park, school ground, club pool.

Mark in this order

  • A start line
  • A bike slalom of cones
  • A transition mat
  • A finish line

Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.

Practice kit first

A helmet that fits, a bike that fits (check brakes, tyres and chain), running shoes, a towel, water; swim kit at the pool (cap, goggles).

Safety

A helmet on every ride; ride only off the road at first; hand signals; an adult within sight in the pool and the open water; wetsuit and buoy only at a club session.

Helmets and wetsuits checked for damage and fit; a brightly coloured swim cap; in cooler water, shorter swims and wetsuits; walk the bike in the change area, helmet on and buckled before touching the bike and off only after racking it.
