Tennis · base setup

Mark your space

Mark it once. Every card in tennis starts from this space and adds what it needs.

Fits: Yard or lane, Terrace, Park, Hall or court

Seen from above, to scale: 5.5 m by 11 m.

The space

A blank wall 3 m wide, or a mini court of 11 m by 5.5 m (red court) marked with tape, with a rope or a line of cones as a net; 2 m clear behind the hitter.

Where it fits: terrace, lane, school court, park court.

Mark in this order

  • A net line (knee height for beginners)
  • A service box
  • A target square on the wall
  • A baseline

Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.

Practice kit first

A short racket for the child's size, a soft foam or red low-bounce ball (not a yellow ball at first), cones, a bucket, tape.

Safety

Keep a racket's length between players; no balls lying around where people run; spread pairs so their balls do not cross; a clear zone round the court; dry the grips if damp; stop when the ball goes into the road; sun and water; do not swing when someone is near.
