Junior lifesaving: throw and tow

Learnt at a club

Ready when: Water-safety knowledge (b4) done and the child swims 50 m.

Before you look for a club

What the coach teaches

Throwing a buoyant aid to a target, reaching with a pole or noodle from the side, helping a tired swimmer with an aid, a basic tow, and the rescue order (call, reach, throw, and swim only last, by trained people).

At home, safe only

Water-safety knowledge (b4); saying the pool rules.

Ask the club

Whether junior lifesaving lessons run, how many children share a lane, whether the instructors hold a current lifesaving award.

What you can see from the side

The child checks that nobody stands behind before throwing.

Self-check what the coach confirms

The instructor marks a buoyant aid thrown on target at 5 m, 3 times.

Stop and get a coach when

The child talks of swimming out to a real person in trouble.

Intermediate is done when the coach confirms all four strokes and starts and turns.
