Top-rope belaying, step by step

Learnt at a club

Ready when: Knots and partner check (i2) done and the gym's belay course accepts the child.

Before you look for a club

What the coach teaches

On the floor first: take in, brake, lower, with the rope calls; then holding a sitting climber just off the ground; then a whole climb and a controlled lower; the brake hand never leaves the rope; standing close to the wall; a back-up belayer holding the brake rope; then holding announced falls.

At home, safe only

Knots and partner check (i2).

Ask the club

What you can see from the side

Self-check what the coach confirms
