Mark your space
Mark it once. Every card in skateboarding starts from this space and adds what it needs.
The space
A flat, smooth surface of about 10 m by 5 m with no traffic (a games court, school hall, quiet car park or clean terrace); later a skatepark with a small, low mini ramp with a long, gentle curve, and a low, short, thick rail.
Where it fits: terrace, hall, park court, skatepark.
Mark in this order
- A start line
- A straight lane
- A cone slalom
- A stopping line
- Four cones in a big rectangle for figure eights
Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.
Practice kit first
A helmet that fits snugly, wrist guards, knee and elbow pads, flat-soled shoes, a board that fits the child.
Grass or carpet for the first static cards.
Safety
Every session: a helmet that fits, wrist guards, knee and elbow pads, and the right shoes; learn the rules and how to fall before moving; constant supervision at the start; never near traffic; check the board (bolts, wheels, grip tape) and the gear for damage; skip a surface that is wet, rough or full of debris; stop when the park gets crowded.
