First supervised sessions, at a range

Learnt at a club

Ready when: Range rules and commands (b1) done and the range or coach agrees the child is old enough under local law.

Before you look for a club

What the coach teaches

Range commands in practice, safe handling, a gun resting on a cushion first, sight alignment, ear and eye protection. Trigger in three phases: pad of the first finger joint, pull straight back; take up to the pressure point and wait for the coach's OK; squeeze steadily until the shot breaks; keep the finger there about 2 seconds. Breath held on the out-breath while aiming. Short series with a still hold after each shot.

At home, safe only

Range rules and commands (b1) to Sight picture and follow-through, no weapon (b4).

Ask the club

The minimum age, the licence and permission rules, who supplies the equipment, the coach-to-child ratio and storage rules.

What you can see from the side

The child follows every command and keeps the muzzle pointed down range.

Self-check what the coach confirms

The coach signs the child off for each step.

Stop and get a coach when

Any unsafe handling; stop at once and tell the range officer.

Basic is done when the range officer or coach clears the child for the first supervised session.
