Mark your space
Mark it once. Every card in rugby starts from this space and adds what it needs.
The space
A flat grass or soft-ground area of 15 m by 10 m; four cones for a grid; two lines as try lines.
Where it fits: park, school ground, village ground (soft ground), indoor hall for passing games.
Mark in this order
- A start line
- A grid with safety lines at each end
- A try line
Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.
Practice kit first
An oval ball (a soft or smaller ball for young children), flags or ribbons for tag, cones, bibs.
Mouthguard for any contact game; boots only on grass.
Safety
Tag and touch have no tackling; contact only with suitably experienced, qualified staff, and a touch pitch for anyone not ready; concussion protocols belong to the union.
A 5 m clear zone round the pitch; padded goalposts; boots checked (no metal, sharp or worn studs, no buckles or zips); mouthguards when the risk of mouth injury is high; positions chosen by ability, size and suitability; nobody causes pain or accepts it.
