Clock, tilt and tournaments

Learnt at a club

Ready when: Openings, with a coach (a1) started.

Before you look for a club

What the coach teaches

The clock (move, then press with the same hand; running out of time loses unless the opponent cannot possibly mate, then it is a draw), managing time starting with long games, tournament conduct (no notes, advice or phones), staying calm after a blunder, keeping going across a whole tournament.

At home, safe only

Sleep and food; a short routine before games; after a loss, shake hands, then later replay the game once from the scoresheet, find the move where it went wrong and say what you would play instead.

Ask the club

The junior tournament rules, ratings and clocks.

What you can see from the side

The child uses the clock evenly and shakes hands.

Self-check what the coach confirms

The child finishes a rated game with at least 10 per cent of the time left.

Stop and get a coach when

The child cries after every loss or refuses to play.
