A uniform, short nails, no jewellery; a partner matched in size; an adult instructor present at all times.
Safety
School judo in Japan teaches no strangles or joint locks to under-18s, and at least one school martial arts standard allows no choke or strangle techniques; ask the club for its own age rules.
Martial arts mats secured together, not overlapping, with 3 m clear around; partners matched for size, age, skill and maturity; jewellery off; nails short and hair tied back; in sparring, strikes stop more than 10 cm short of the target; stop on the word or a clap; ask your partner before going faster or harder.
