Mark your space
Mark it once. Every card in handball starts from this space and adds what it needs.
The space
A wall and a clear 3 m by 3 m for throwing and catching; a small court with a lowered goal, or a goal marked on a wall; goals can be cones, benches or a chalk box on a wall; keep 1 m clear along the sides and 2 m behind the goals.
Where it fits: lane (wall), terrace, indoor hall, park, school ground.
Mark in this order
- A throwing line
- A chalk target on the wall
- A goal area line
- A goal
Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.
Practice kit first
A soft ball: a size 1 ball for primary and junior secondary ages, size 2 for older teenagers, never a hard rubber ball; a foam ball for the youngest; hoops, cones, a bin.
Resin is not needed.
Safety
Home and school handball without contact; keep the head and arm of the thrower free; no pushing or holding; nobody but the keeper in the goal area; children try every position; goals fixed against tipping, posts padded; in keeper practice shoot only when the keeper is ready and aim for accuracy, not power; jewellery off, hair tied back; no games on hard concrete.
