Mark your space

Mark it once. Every card in gymnastics starts from this space and adds what it needs.

Fits: One room, Terrace, Hall or court

Seen from above, to scale: 2 m by 3 m.

The space

A clear 2 m by 3 m with a thick mat, folded blankets or a soft carpet; a bench or low box for balance walks; chalk lines for the cartwheel hand and foot marks. Clear furniture corners and glass.

Where it fits: indoor room, terrace (mat on a smooth floor), school hall.

Mark in this order

  • A start spot
  • A mat edge
  • Chalk marks for hands and feet

Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.

Practice kit first

A thick mat or carpet; a beanbag; hoops or chalk circles; bare feet.

Real apparatus only at a club.

Safety

An adult who has read the card and stands as shown; hard floors and furniture corners cleared; bare feet; no headstands or handstands without a coach; no trampoline at home.

The head is never a contact point in a home balance.

Home work stays low (fundamental movements, nothing above about 40 cm); inversion and flight are club work with spotters.

Falling, rolling and landing are practised often; partners are matched for size and weight (b7); the child decides whether to try, and "no" is accepted; any touch for support is explained first.
