Mark your space
Mark it once. Every card in golf starts from this space and adds what it needs.
The space
Indoors or on a lawn, a mug or box as the hole and a 2 to 7 m putting strip. For chipping and full swing: a long empty field and a safe zone behind the hitter with nobody within four full club lengths or in front of the hitter.
Where it fits: terrace and indoor room (putting), park and field (chipping; full swing at a range).
Mark in this order
- A putting start line
- A target box 2 m by 2 m
- A hitting line with a safe zone behind
- Flags or cones at 20, 40 and 60 m for the distance game
Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.
Practice kit first
A toy or short putter, a plastic club, tennis balls, soft PVC balls; real golf balls and clubs only on a course or range.
Safety
Check the area for obstacles; stop and look before every swing; clubs on the ground when not in use; sun safety; call "fore" if a ball heads towards anyone; tennis, plastic or rubber balls where space is limited; never stand in front of the ball or swing towards people; everyone hits the same way, with left-handers placed so they can be seen; clear signals to start hitting, stop and fetch balls, and everyone fetches together, leaving clubs at the line; no clubs with smooth grips or loose heads; shelter when a storm comes.
