Mark your space
Mark it once. Every card in flag football starts from this space and adds what it needs.
The space
A clear strip 10 to 20 yards (about 10 to 18 m) long and 8 m wide; four cones in a 10-yard square for the cone drill; a line of scrimmage. Field sizes by age: ask the league. Mark an end zone at each end.
Where it fits: lane (short), park, school ground, village ground.
Mark in this order
- A start line
- Two cones 5 yards apart for catching
- Four cones for the cone drill
- A touchdown line
Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.
Practice kit first
Any throwable ball, a belt with two flags (or a sock tucked into the waistband), shoes as cones.
A smaller football is easier for small hands.
Safety
No contact: a tackle is a flag pull, held up so the carrier knows; no blocking, including the player who rushes the quarterback; no jumping over or shielding the flags; shirts tucked in so the flags hang free; trousers without pockets to protect the fingers; give each runner a lane in chasing games; waiting players stand to the side.
