Mark your space
Mark it once. Every card in fencing starts from this space and adds what it needs.
The space
A line of tape about 10 m long on a clear floor (a competition strip is 14 m by 1.5 to 2 m); a wall target at lunge distance.
Where it fits: indoor room, hall, terrace (footwork only).
Mark in this order
- The tape line
- An en garde mark for the front foot
- A wall target
Chalk or tape is enough. Tick each mark as you make it.
Practice kit first
A wooden spoon or a rolled newspaper for the grip; nothing pointed.
Real mask, jacket, plastron and glove only in a club.
Safety
Carry the weapon tip down when not fencing; never point a weapon at anyone without a mask on both; foils with protective tips; check kit for damage before and during practice, and never reuse a broken or badly bent blade; the mask fits with the chin inside the bottom and the bib over the throat; no fencing in bright sunlight (the mask distorts distance); never cross a strip where people are fencing; salute before and shake hands after a bout.
