Doubles: who takes the middle?

Learnt at a club

Ready when: Flat drives at the wall (i5) and Lunge and flick (i7) done; the player can rally 10 shots.

Before you look for a club

What the coach teaches

The two doubles positions (side by side to defend, one in front and one behind to attack), how to switch between them, the doubles serve and serving order, and calling for the shuttle so partners do not clash.

At home, safe only

The doubles serving rule: when your side's score is even, serve from the right; when it is odd, serve from the left. Short serves to a target (Short serve to a target (b4)). The smash and block pattern with one partner (Smash and block (i4)).

Ask the club

Is there a junior doubles session? Which serve-height rule does the club play: below the lowest rib, or the fixed 1.15 m?

What you can see from the side

After a lift, both players stand side by side; after a smash, the hitter stays back and the partner moves to the net; a player calls "mine" or "yours" on shuttles down the middle.

Self-check what the coach confirms

In a game to 21, fewer than 5 shuttles down the middle that both players left, or both went for.
