Push for state selection, or stay at district level a while longer

The first real gate in Indian domestic sport, and the hardest single step to reverse.

When it arrives

The question usually surfaces the first season a coach starts talking about your child differently from teammates — earlier attention, tougher drills, mention of trials. In most sports that lands somewhere in the state sub-junior or junior window, roughly ages 12 to 15, and it is the first real gate: moving from district to state is the hardest single step in Indian domestic sport.

The options

Broadly three: push training volume now to chase the state trial window; hold at district level and let selection come later if it comes; or step back from competitive intensity and keep sport recreational while focus shifts elsewhere. None of these is reversible without cost — more training now can crowd out school, less training now can close a window that doesn't reopen.

What's actually known

The domestic pathway is genuinely six structured layers, district to national, and the state gate is real, not folklore — but per-sport statistics on how many district-level athletes reach state are not on this platform yet. Treat what a coach says about your child's chances as a data point, not a fact.

Talking about it

The conversation usually splits along who is more anxious: one parent watching a plateau and wanting to intervene, the other worried about what intervention costs elsewhere. Naming that split before naming a training plan helps — the argument is rarely actually about the child's ability.
